Onufri
Onufri , also Onufri Argitis (* 15th or 16th century in Berat ; † 16th or 17th century), was an Orthodox clergyman and one of the most important icon painters of the 16th century in Southeast Europe.
life and work
Onufri was believed to be of Albanian descent. Evidence of his work has come down to us mainly in central and southern Albania . Little more is known about the artist's life than his name and the dates of some of his works. From 1547 he worked for several years in Berat and after 1555 in Shelcan near Elbasan . We also know that he founded his own painting school and workshop, which was continued by his son Nikolla .
At the castle of Berat, the city for whose churches Onufri created a particularly large number of icons and frescoes, there is an Onufri Museum in which his pictures are exhibited.
Onufri achieved legendary fame through the use of a special reddish tone in his painting that could not be reproduced by any other icon painter.
In Albania, the "Onufri Prize" is announced once a year, which is aimed at international artists, including students.
