Career

At club level

With the Ilisiakos junior team , Ioannis Athinaiou won the Greek Junior Championship for the 2006/07 season. In this competition Athinaiou was chosen in the selection of the best five and subsequently named the most valuable player of the season. The selection of the Best Five was completed by the players Nikos Theodorakos ( Larisa ), Giorgios Bogris (Ilisiakos), Zisis Sarikopoulos ( Olympiakos ) and Kostas Sloukas (Mantoulides). In the same season Athinaiou had also made his debut for the men's team of Ilisiakos, which was then playing in the Greek second division . From the 2007/08 season he was part of the fixed rotation of the squad and was used in all 30 possible games in the 2008/09 season. At that season, the Ilisiakos finished the second division in second place, which entitled to promotion to the first division. Athinaiou switched to league rivals and top club Panionios . The then 21-year-old signed there for the following four seasons. For the first two years, Athinaiou proved to be a reliable backup. For the 2011/12 season he was awarded to the first division promoted KAOD. After his return, Athinaiou also played on the international stage through Panionio's participation in the Eurocup .

With the completion of his contract, the Guard moved to Aris Saloniki for the 2013/14 season . There Athinaiou played his best season so far. With an average of 13.61 points per game, the Guard also attracted the interest of foreign clubs. Although Athinaiou expressed his intention to end the season at Aris first and only to examine incoming offers in the summer, he moved to the final stages of the Italian championship at the end of March 2014 after 22 games for Aris . Athinaiou only played four league games for Armani Milan , especially since he was not eligible to play in the Euroleague due to his late move, after which he had his contract terminated in mid-May due to insufficient playing times. For the season 2014/15 he joined the Turkish league and should in Eskişehir Basket the migrated Christos Tapoutos replaced. On December 2, 2014, the association announced the termination of the contract with Athinaiou, who was presented on the same evening as a new addition to the AEK Athens .

At the beginning of the 2015/16 season he signed a three-year contract with Olympiacos , which in turn, with Dimitris Katsivelis , had lost a player to the AEK. With Olympiakos he played internationally again by participating in the Euroleague and celebrated his first national championship title at the end of the season. In the 2017/18 season he played for Aris Saloniki and switched to city rivals PAOK Saloniki in summer 2018 . He left this in favor of the French team from Fos Provence Basket in mid-January 2019.
