Nathaniel McMillan (born August 3, 1964 in Raleigh , North Carolina ) is an American basketball coach and former player. Since 2016 he has been under contract with the Indiana Pacers in the NBA .
Player career
McMillan played from 1986 to 1998 in the North American professional league NBA for the Seattle SuperSonics , with whom he reached the NBA Finals in 1996 alongside Gary Payton and Shawn Kemp . McMillan was known as a player for his strong defense, so he was appointed to the NBA All-Defensive Second Team in 1994 and 1995, and in 1994 he led the league in steals with an average of 3.0. In 1998 McMillan ended his career. His jersey number 10 has been withdrawn from the Sonics for years of service.
Coaching career
He then became an assistant coach and from 2000 head coach of the Sonics. With the Sonics he reached the playoffs twice in five seasons (2002 and 2005). When his contract with the Sonics expired in 2005, McMillan received an offer from the Portland Trail Blazers and accepted. On March 15, 2012, he was released and replaced by Kaleb Canales . He then accepted an offer as an assistant coach with the Indiana Pacers .
Since 2006, McMillan has also supported Mike Krzyzewski as an assistant coach for the United States national team . With these he won the gold medal at the Olympic Games in 2008 and 2012. After Frank Vogel's expiring contract was not renewed after he was eliminated in the first round of the 2016 play-offs against the Toronto Raptors , the Pacers promoted McMillan as their team's new head coach.
