Domantas Sabonis (born May 3, 1996 in Portland , Oregon ) is a professional Lithuanian basketball player who is currently under contract with the Indiana Pacers in the NBA . He played for Gonzaga University in the American college league NCAA . Sabonis is 211 cm tall and is mostly used in the center position. He is the son of Arvydas Sabonis , who is considered the best Lithuanian basketball player in history and is a member of the Naismith Memorial Basketball Hall of Fame .
Career
Domantas Sabonis was born in Portland, USA when his father Arvydas was active for the Portland Trail Blazers in the National Basketball Association . After the father's career ended, the family moved to Spain, where Domantas played for various youth teams at the CB Málaga . In 2012/13 he was active in the LEB Plata for CB Axarquía and rose with this club, which maintains a cooperation with Málaga, in the LEB Oro , the second highest division in Spain. Although he was only 16 years old at the time, Sabonis made his debut for the first team of CB Málaga in a friendly against KK Cibona Zagreb on September 5, 2012 , but ultimately without being included in the season squad. At the beginning of the 2013/14 season, he was the youngest player in the history of the club in Malaga, in a game in the ACB league .
In the summer of 2014, Sabonis announced that he would play college basketball at Gonzaga University in the future . He played an important role at the bank in his freshman year of college and was one of the top freshmen at the WCC Conference. He scored 9.7 points and 7.1 rebounds on average. After a strong sophomore season with 17.6 points and 11.8 rebounds on average, Sabonis decided to leave Gonzaga and sign up for the NBA draft .
In the 2016 NBA draft , Sabonis was selected in 11th place by the Orlando Magic and then transferred to the Oklahoma City Thunder with Victor Oladipo and Ersan Ilyasova for Serge Ibaka . Sabonis made his debut in the NBA on October 26, 2016 in the game against the Philadelphia 76ers , where he contributed 5 points in 16 minutes to the win. At the end of the season, Sabonis had an average of 5.9 points and 3.6 rebounds. After only one year he was transferred from the Thunder to the Indiana Pacers together with Oladipo for Paul George . At the Pacers, Sabonis developed into an important support in the young Pacer team. In 2020 Sabonis was invited to the NBA All-Star Game as the second Lithuanian after Žydrūnas Ilgauskas (2003 & 2005) .
National team
Domantas Sabonis made his national team debut at the U-16 European Championship in 2012, where he averaged 14.1 points, 14.4 rebounds and 2.4 assists per game. On July 27, 2012, he reached the maximum number of rebounds (27 in one match). In 2013 Sabonis took part in the U-18 European Championship.
At the European basketball championship in 2015 he reached the final of the European championship with the professional team of Lithuania . In the final, however, they lost to Spain 63-80.
