Sitting volleyball

Sitting volleyball

Sitting volleyball is a variant of volleyball and is mainly offered in Germany in disabled sports. The game was invented in the Netherlands and is based on volleyball . However, it has been modified so that it can be played by people with disabilities.

It is a sport that people with and without disabilities can play together. People without disabilities are at a disadvantage due to their restricted mobility on the ground. Sitting volleyball is played sitting on the hall floor, otherwise the normal volleyball rules apply, with a few exceptions.

Main differences in the rules compared to traditional volleyball

  • The specification may be blocked.
  • The field is smaller (5 m × 6 m to 9 m × 9 m instead of 18 m × 9 m).
  • The net height is lower (1.15 meters men / 1.05 meters women).
  • The torso must be in contact with the ground at the time of contact with the ball.

Team constellation at league games

This is regulated differently. In invitation tournaments with international participation, there is no restriction regarding a disability. At the German championships, all players have to prove a disability of at least 20%. Mixed teams (women and men) are permitted.

Move

Players can use their arms and legs to move around on the floor. The most important basic rule, however, is that the trunk is in contact with the ground at the time of an action. If this is not the case, the opponent wins the point and the right to serve.

Counting method

Since the sitting volleyball rules follow the international volleyball rules, every ball has been counted as a point since 1999. The team that reaches 25 points first and is two points ahead wins the set. The game goes to the team that won three sets first, whereby the fifth set ( tie-break ) is only played up to 15 points.
