The basketball sports community (BSG) Blau-Weiss Elephants Grevenbroich is a German basketball club from the city of Grevenbroich .

history

The basketball sports community Blau-Weiß Grevenbroich was founded in 1983 through a spin-off from BSV Grevenbroich.

1980s

In their first season 1983/84 the 1st men's team rose to the 1st district class. Later they made the leap into the district league. In 1989 the Hungarian Laszlo Lang came to Grevenbroich.

1990s

Lang, who had played 102 international matches for his home country, led Grevenbroich as a player-coach up to the top division. In 1996 there was "reunification" with the BSV Grevenbroich. In 1998 the men's team rose to the 2nd regional league. In 1999, the former Hungarian international Mathyas Ranky became the new coach.

2000s

In 2001, the BSG reached an agreement with Maccabi Düsseldorf, in the course of which a gaming community was founded and immediately dissolved, whereby the Düsseldorf right to participate in the 1st regional league was transferred to the BSG, which was playing in the 2nd regional league at the time. Another point of the agreement provided that Maccabi's trainer Raphael Wilder  took over the post in Grevenbroich and also brought some of his players from Düsseldorf. Wilder led the BSG in the 2001/02 season to fourth place in the 1st Regionalliga West. At the end of the 2002/03 game year, he was promoted to the 2nd basketball league and won the WBV Cup. Wilder's top performers in the championship year included the US playmaker John Bynum and the Canadian inside player Whitney Harris.

In the 2003/04 season, relegation was just managed, the 2004/05 season ended in ninth place in the 2nd Bundesliga, which was the best result in the club's history at the time. The outstanding man of this season was John Bynum, who returned to Grevenbroich in the summer of 2004 after a year in the Norwegian first division. In the 2006/07 season, Grevenbroich had to accept relegation from the 2nd Bundesliga.

After relegation there was a separation from coach Wilder, his successor was the Bundesliga experienced Heimo Förster . Förster led the BSG to second place in the 1st Regionalliga West in 2007/08. Before the start of the 2008/09 game year, the Konstantin Group took over the naming rights to the team, which from then on went into the race as Konstantin Elephants Grevenbroich. The 2008/09 season was finished again as runner-up.

2010s

Second place was repeated in 2009/10. In the spring of 2010, the BSG had qualified for the 2nd Bundesliga ProB  , but decided against promotion. The Konstantin Group stopped providing financial support after the season, which meant that 50,000 euros were missing from the budget.

In 2012 Hartmut Oehmen, who had previously worked as a trainer and manager of the Krefeld Panthers and Willicher TV, took over this dual position at BSG. Oehmen brought a breath of fresh air to Grevenbroich: It was possible to increase the audience again, in the 2013/14 and 2015/16 playing years he led the team to win the WBV Cup. At the end of the 2017/18 game year, which ended as runner-up in the Regionalliga West, Oehmen gave up his coaching position and instead took over the position of managing director. Simon Bennett became the new coach. After the departure of players and because of several injuries, Grevenbroich's staff were short of staff, so Bennett returned to the field as a player in February 2019, while Oehmen took over as coach again.

2020s

Jason Price  was brought in as coach for the 2019/2020 season . After six defeats in a row, Price had to leave at the beginning of February 2020, successor for a short time was Ryon Howard, who had started the season as a Grevenbroich player, but suffered an injury in mid-January 2020 that turned out to be a cruciate ligament tear. With Kenneth Pfüller, a new trainer was hired in May 2020, who previously worked in the junior division of RheinStars Cologne .
