from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The athletes of the year 1999 in Germany were chosen by specialist journalists and honored on December 19th in the Kurhaus in Baden-Baden . The election was organized for the 53rd time by the Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz (ISK).

The title of Sportsman of the Year went to ski jumping world champion Martin Schmitt , who, together with his teammates, was also honored as part of the team of the year. The tennis player and French Open winner Steffi Graf received the award as Sportswoman of the Year for the fifth time in the year of her resignation (from 1986 to 1989 four times in a row). As at her last two honors, Graf was not present, while Schmitt - who had previously celebrated a double victory in the World Cup in Zakopane, Poland - was flown in for the ceremony. The awards for Schmitt, Graf and the ski jumpers were each viewed as "favorite victories". As a junior athlete of the year the magazine named German Sports Aid Foundation , the sprinter Sina Schielke .
