Sportsman of the year 1981 (Germany)
The athletes of the year 1981 in the Federal Republic of Germany were honored on December 12th in the Hotel Intercontinental in West Berlin , whose ballroom turned out to be too small for the event. The election was organized for the 35th time by the Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz (ISK). 793 voting sports journalists meant a new record turnout in the election. For the first time since 1953, Toni Mang was once again a motorcycle racer "Sportsman of the Year".
The musical program put James Last and his Big Band. Guests of honor at the event were soccer national coach Jupp Derwall and boxing legend Max Schmeling .
