from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The best German athletes of 1956 were honored on December 18th in the Liederhalle Stuttgart . The election was organized for the 10th time by Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz (ISK). Although the Olympic Summer Games in Melbourne only ended on December 8, the election had to be carried out in a rush, a total of 342 sports reporters and editors cast their votes. There was no separate evaluation of athletes, the best woman in the evaluation was “Sportswoman of the Year”. The best non-Olympic athlete was the motorcycle racer Wilhelm Herz , who finished 11th with 57 votes.

The event began with a minute's silence for the fatally injured Werner Haas , who was 1953 Sportsman of the Year . For the first time, a donated badge of honor was awarded to the "Sportsman of the Year", which was also subsequently given to the previous overall winners Gottfried von Cramm , Georg Meier , Herbert Klein , Paul and Ria Falk , Karl Kling , Heinz Fütterer and Hans Günter Winkler . Winkler was also the second athlete, after Gottfried von Cramm ( 1947 and 1948 ), to be named "Sportsman of the Year" twice in a row.
