Sportsman of the year 1959 (Germany)
The best German athletes of 1959 were honored in December in the Tellkampfschule in Hanover . The election was organized for the 13th time by the Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz (ISK). 431 German sports journalists (both from the Federal Republic and the GDR ) took part in the election, placing the athlete Martin Lauer in first place. Lauer received 3912 points and was named first by 320 journalists. The best woman in the ranking was the figure skater Marika Kilius in 13th position (as a pair skater together with Hans-Jürgen Bäumler ), who was thus named Sportswoman of the Year. The Germany eight was honored as Team of the Year .

The second-best result among the women was achieved by the canoe athlete Rosemarie Bisinger , who was in 19th place with 337 votes, while the third-best was the swimmer Wiltrud Urselmann with 224 votes (in the overall ranking 26th).
