Athlete of the year 1964 (Germany)
The best German athletes of 1964 were honored on January 8, 1965 in the Kurhaus Baden-Baden . The election was organized for the 18th time by the Internationale Sport-Korrespondenz (ISK). A total of 543 sports journalists took part in the election. The guest of honor at the event was the US swimmer Don Schollander , who was dubbed the “world's best athlete 1964” by the world press. His appearance was made possible by the financial support of several German Volksbanks . The Protestant regional bishop of Baden, Hans Heidland , gave the lecture on the subject of "Master: Role Model or Star?".
"Sportsman of the year" was Willi Holdorf , Olympic champion in the decathlon . State Secretary Sepp Schwarz presented him with the honorary award of the Prime Minister of Baden-Württemberg.
For the first time, a separate vote was held for the “Sportswoman of the Year”, which was won jointly by canoeists Annemarie Zimmermann and Roswitha Esser . They received the "Golden Ring of the City of Baden-Baden" as a gift of honor.
The four-man with helmsman from the Berlin Rowing Club , which won gold at the Summer Olympics , was named “Team of the Year” . The team was honored by Federal Minister of the Interior Hermann Höcherl .
The skier Barbi Henneberger , who died in an accident while filming in April 1964, received 31 points posthumously (10th place among women).
Men
A total of 76 athletes and couples were named, with Marika Zahn-Kilius and Hans-Jürgen Bäumler in 16th place with 438 points including a mixed couple.
The journalists were able to award 55 points each (10 points for first place, 9 points for second place, 8 points for third place, etc.).
Women
A total of 29 athletes and couples were named.
The sports journalists were able to award a total of 6 points (3 points for 1st place, 2 points for 2nd place and 1 point for 3rd place).
