Egon Henninger (born June 22, 1940 in Kühlungsborn ) is a former GDR swimming athlete who won two Olympic silver medals with the individual relay relay.

Career

Swimming career

In 1959, Henninger won the breaststroke as a member of the Volksmarine at a military sports festival. Just one year later, the 1.74 meter tall athlete qualified as part of the all-German team for the 1960 Olympic Games in Rome . In 2: 40.1 minutes he reached fourth place in the 200-meter breaststroke.

In 1962 at the European Championships in Leipzig , he took third place over 200 meters chest. With the 4 x 100 meter layer relay of the GDR with Jürgen Dietze , Egon Henninger, Horst-Günter Gregor and Frank Wiegand he won the European title.

For the last time the layer relay for the Olympic Games in 1964 was put together as part of the all-German team from two swimmers from east and west. The back swimmer Ernst-Joachim Küppers at the start and the freestyle swimmer Hans-Joachim Klein as the final swimmer framed Henninger and Gregor from the GDR, together the four swimmers won the silver medal behind the US relay . Henninger swam 2: 31.1 minutes on the 200-meter chest course and finished in fifth place.

Henninger took third place over 200 meters breast at the European Swimming Championships in Utrecht in 1966 . The 4 x 100 meter layer relay with Dietze, Henninger, Gregor and Wiegand won silver behind the relay from the Soviet Union .

At the 1968 Olympic Games in Mexico City , Henninger reached the finals on the new 100-meter chest distance and took eighth place, over 200 meters he was sixth. The GDR relay with Roland Matthes , Henninger, Gregor and Wiegand again took second place behind the US relay.

At the European Championships in Barcelona in 1970, Henninger took fourth place on both individual routes. Klaus Katzur took his place in the relay .

At GDR championships, he won eight individual titles on the 100-meter chest distance from 1962 to 1970, only in 1967 Katzur won. He won the 200-meter distance in 1960–1963, 1966, 1968 and 1970. Egon Henninger set world records at yards on both individual courses and with the relay. On the metric distances he set a new European record over 200 meters in 1960 and a European record over 100 meters chest in 1964 .

Further career

Egon Henninger studied at the German University of Physical Culture . After completing his studies, he worked as a sports instructor for the People's Navy and rose to become a frigate captain. He competed for the ASK Vorwärts Rostock .
