The Val Castle (French: Château de Val ) is in the French commune of Lanobre of the Canton of Champs-sur-Tarentaine-Marchal , a subdivision of the Arrondissements Mauriac in the Cantal in the region of Auvergne Rhône-Alpes is. The castle stands since September 1946 as a monument historique under monument protection . The associated castle chapel was added to the list of monuments in September 1961 .

description

The castle, which once dominated the Dordogne valley from a rocky promontory, has stood since 1952 on a promontory that protrudes into the Barrage de Bort-les-Orgues reservoir . The original character of the castle can only be guessed at when the water level is low. The multi-storey building is surrounded by five roughly equally thick and one thinner towers , each with cantilevers and conical roofs . The individual floors are connected by a spiral staircase in the vestibule. Originally the courtyard was roofless. The first floor consists of three large rooms with ornate fireplaces from the mid-19th century and various furniture . Every year there is an art exhibition on the second floor with works by painters, most of whom come from the region. From the battlements on the top floor, the artistically crafted roof trusses of the towers can be seen.

In front of the castle is a Gothic chapel with a turret and a round tower, which is dedicated to Saint Blaise . Above the gate there is a bas-relief of the coat of arms of the d'Estaing family.

history

The original Val castle was the main residence of the Thynières (also spelled Tinières) family. It was sold by Guillaume de Thynières to Guillot d'Estaing, who had today's castle built on the foundations of the original complex in 1440. Over the centuries the castle deteriorated and in the middle of the 20th century the reservoir turned it into a kind of moated castle , which in 1953 became the property of the town of Bort-les-Orgues.

In 1960 the film Le Capitan was shot there, directed by André Hunebelle .
