The Château de Murol ( French Château de Murol ) is the ruins of a medieval hilltop castle in the northeast of the French community Murol in Auvergnat Puy-de-Dôme . It has been under monument protection as Monument historique since 1889 .
history
The castle began in the 12th century. The first fortification was built on a basalt headland at the intersection of three roads. Under the rule of Guillaume Sam, it was enlarged and strengthened in the 14th century with the construction of a mighty tower and a second chapel .
When Jeanne de Murol married Gaspard d'Estaing, the castle came into the possession of the d'Estaing family in the 15th century. Francois d'Estaing reinforced the complex with cannons in the 16th century and had additional buildings built in the Renaissance style on the east side.
The castle survived the wars of religion with fights between Huguenots and the Catholic League without damage. Although Cardinal Richelieu subsequently ordered the demolition of numerous castles and fortifications, Murol remained at the French court in the 15th century due to the prestige of the d'Estaing family. In the middle of the 17th century the castle was abandoned and fell into disrepair.
During the French Revolution , the complex served as a prison, robber's den and quarry. Thanks to a donation from the owner, the Count of Chabrol, the castle became the property of the Puy-de-Dôme département in 1890 and then became the property of the Murol commune in 1950.
Trivia
Guy de Maupassant mentions the castle in his short story "Little Drama".
