As a swimmer, Dietze took part in the Summer Olympics in 1960 and 1964 : in 1960 he swam 100-meter back, four years later he started the 200-meter back course. During his competitive sports career he also took part in European championships. In 1962, he won the European Championship title in the 4 × 100 meter relay of the German Democratic Republic (in addition to Dietze, Egon Henninger , Horst-Günter Gregor and Frank Wiegand ) in a European record time (4: 09.0 min). In 1962, 1964, 1965 and 1966 he was GDR champion over 100 meters back, in 1960, 1961 and 1963 he won silver over the same distance and bronze in 1959. Over 200 meters back he was third in 1963 and second in 1964 in the GDR championships. With the 4 × 100-meter relay of the SC DHfK Leipzig he was champion of the GDR in 1960 and also won gold with the club relay over 4 × 100-meter medley in 1959, 1960, 1961 and 1962. Even after his Dietze started his competitive sports career in swimming competitions, in 2011 the swimmer from the HSG DHfK Leipzig  set a German short course record for age group 65 over the 50-meter-back course at the Masters Sprint Cup in Rostock with a time of 36.07 seconds.

After completing his studies, Dietze worked as an engineer and then completed distance and direct studies at the German University of Physical Culture (DHfK) in Leipzig, which he completed in 1971 as a certified sports teacher. He became a research assistant at the DHfK, wrote his doctoral thesis, and completed his habilitation in 1988 (subject: The teaching method of swimming with special consideration of its historical development and its application in the areas of physical culture and sport) and was a lecturer in theory and methodology of training in sport swimming.

As a result of the winding up of the DHfK in 1990 after German reunification and in the founding phase of the Faculty of Sports Science at the University of Leipzig  , which lasted until 1993 , Dietze was involved in the development of committees. At the new faculty he took over the management of the institute for swimming and, as a substitute professor, took over the management of the institute for movement and training science in endurance and high-speed sports. In 1994 Dietze took up a position as a lecturer for movement and training science in endurance sports at the University of Leipzig. In 2004 he was appointed Associate Professor.

From 1995 Dietze headed two research projects to learn swimming technique including aqua aerobics, and dealt with swimming technique, including starting and turning as well as basic training. In 2002 he published the textbook “I learn to swim” with Katrin Barth, and in 2003 “I train to swim” came out.

In March 2006 Dietze was appointed responsible for top-class sport at the University of Leipzig. In 2007 he resigned from university.

In 2012 he was awarded the Leipzig University Medal. He was made an honorary member of the HSG DHfK Leipzig in 2018, and he is honorary president of the Saxon Swimming Association .
