Helga Schultze's father was a German youth champion and club master with the Zehlendorfer Wasps. Her career began in Switzerland when she won a tournament during her training at the interpreting school in Lausanne and thus became the focus of the German Tennis Association. Together with her sister Margret she played in Hanau until 1964 and then moved to Berlin to the LTTC Rot-Weiß.
Helga Schultze, who was used 16 times for Germany in the FedCup , was ten times German champion , winning five of these titles in singles (1964, 1967, 1970, 1973 and 1974). In 1970 she also became International German Champion . In the 1960s she was placed in the world rankings. At the 1964 French Open , she and her Argentinian partner Norma Baylon reached the final in women's doubles. She is also the author of the book Man is what he eats and how he lives .
