Niko Kappel (* 1. March 1995 in Schwabisch Gmund , Baden-Württemberg ) is a German Disabled Athlete of the start class F41 ( Midget athletes), which refers to the shot put has specialized. His greatest success to date is the gold medal at the Paralympics 2016 in Rio de Janeiro.

career path

Kappel grew up in Welzheim , where he completed an apprenticeship at Volksbank Welzheim .

Athletic career

In 2015, Kappel was runner-up in Doha .

In 2016 he became vice European champion in Grosseto . At the Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro , Kappel won gold with a width of 13.57 meters and received the silver laurel leaf from Federal President Joachim Gauck .

In 2017 he became world champion in London with 13.81 meters .

In 2018 Kappel was able to become vice European champion once again with a height of 12.60 meters at the home European championship in Berlin .

In 2019 he hit 13.87 meters in Dubai and became vice world champion again .

2020 Kappel involved to bridge the competitive free time during the Covid-19 pandemic and the shift of the Summer Paralympics 2020 to 2021 at the of Mathias Mester proclaimed Parantänischen Games 2020 , a 14-day series sporty and more fun "competitions" in domestic quarantine . When competitions were allowed again, due to the pandemic, but with official referees, Kappel hit the ball at 14.40 meters at an official competition organized at short notice by the Württemberg Athletics Association in Stuttgart on June 20, 2020. He had exceeded the world record set by Briton Kyron Duke in 2019 by 21 centimeters. However, the impact was not recognized by the International Paralympic Committee (IPC), as the competition was only reported in retrospect. Exactly one week later, Kappel catapulted the ball to 14.10 meters in a test competition in Sindelfingen on June 27, 2020. On July 5, 2020, he set an official new world record with 14.30 meters at the throwing meeting in Bad Boll.
