The DFL Foundation is a non-profit foundation dedicated to social projects. It was founded in November 2008 by the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH and the DFL e. V. founded. It is based in Frankfurt am Main and the current CEO is Stefan Kiefer.

Purpose of the foundation

The DFL Foundation uses the popularity of German professional football and the Bundesliga to promote and support social projects. In addition to the commitment of the 36 professional clubs, the DFL Foundation should, according to the statutes, promote sport, education and upbringing as well as international understanding. She is involved in three subject areas: integration and participation, healthy and active growing up, top-class sport.

The foundation grants grants on request, but also carries out its own projects and enters into partnerships.

Campaigns

In the spring of 2009, the “Athletes for Athletes” campaign was developed in cooperation with the DFL. In the course of this, TV spots were broadcast until 2010 in which well-known players and coaches of the Bundesliga and Olympians from various sports campaigned for mutual support and jointly asked for donations to Deutsche Sporthilfe .

In July 2011 the major campaign entitled “Integration. It succeeds easily. ”This is used nationwide to promote the integration of people of foreign origin. The soccer ball serves as a connecting element. As with "Sportler für Sportler", the focus of the campaign is a TV spot that was filmed with talented young players from the U17 and U19 teams as well as Bundesliga professionals Gerald Asamoah, Mario Götze, Ilkay Gündogan and Sidney Sam. The spot was set to music by Wolfgang Niedecken, singer of the band BAP.

In March 2018, the DFL Foundation, together with all 36 Bundesliga and Bundesliga 2 clubs, took a stand against discrimination with the "Stroke through prejudices" campaign. In various spots, the Bundesliga players Manuel Neuer , Naldo and Kevin-Prince Boateng as well as the curators of the DFL Foundation, Marcel Reif and Wolfgang Niedecken, called on people to resolutely counter social exclusion. On the 27th matchday of the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga (season 17/18), a variety of activities in the stadiums of the 36 professional clubs set an example for solidarity in society. The focus was on 36 projects from the professional club environment, which advocate fair cooperation. The projects were presented on the clubheim.dfl-stiftung.de platform with the aim of using the wide reach of professional football to create a stage for smaller projects. The philosophy behind this is to continue to provide project support and funding from the DFL Foundation and clubs beyond the days of action.

In addition, dozens of smaller projects and campaigns from all subject areas have been funded in recent years.

Source and use of funds

The DFL Foundation finances its sponsorship activities mainly through monetary fines that the Bundesliga and 2nd Bundesliga clubs have to pay for violating the DFL Deutsche Fußball Liga GmbH licensing procedure, as well as through income from international benefit matches and donations from DFL e. V. and the German Football Association e. V. (DFB). Since the first regular and full financial year 2009/10, the annual funding expenditure has increased from 0.9 million euros to over 4.8 million euros most recently. The total funding has grown steadily from year to year and amounted to more than 21.5 million euros at the end of the 2017/18 financial year.
