Jochen Wollmert (born November 22, 1964 ) is a German table tennis player and multiple winner of the Paralympic Games . The now 53-year-old won individual gold for the second time at the age of 43 in Beijing and repeated the individual gold medal at the 2012 Paralympics in London. He is being trained by Volker Ziegler and will qualify for his 7th Paralympics in January 2016, which took place in Rio de Janeiro from September 7th to 18th.

He started in disabled sports for TSF Heuchelheim in 2018 after playing for Borussia Düsseldorf and RBS Solingen for years . In regular sports he serves for the TTC Bärbroich in the association league.

Sporting successes

When he participated in the Paralympics for the first time in 1992 in Barcelona , he won bronze in both the individual and the team. In 1996 in Atlanta , 2000 in Sydney and 2004 in Athens he won gold with the team. In singles he was able to win the silver medal in Atlanta and Athens. He won the Paralympics for the first time in 2000 in Sydney and was able to repeat this success in Beijing in 2008 and in London in 2012 .

At the 1990 World Disabled Championships in Assen, he won with the team and in the individual. He repeated this double success in team and individual at the World Championships in Montreux 2006. At the 1998 World Championships in Paris he was the individual winner and at the 2002 World Cup in Taipei team winner. At the European Championships he was at the top of the podium several times in the individual. Altogether he was German handicapped athlete champion 46 times, 22 times in singles, 11 times in doubles and 13 times German champion with the team (currently with the RBS Solingen). Since the world rankings were introduced on March 1, 1998, he was number 1 in the world in his class for 11 years, 9 years of which were uninterrupted. Jochen Wollmert is currently number 12 in his class, with an upward trend.

In his six Paralympic appearances, Jochen Wollmert managed to make it to the individual finals five times in a row, so since Atlanta 1996. He won three times, twice he won silver.

Jochen Wollmert is a prime example of active inclusion. He predominantly plays in teams of non-disabled people, until 2012 in the TTVWH league for TSG Heilbronn and from 2012 to 2014 for TV Mosbach only one year in the Baden league and in the second year (2013/2014 season) in the Baden league -Wuerttemberg. Since the 2014/2015 season he has been hunting for points for Borussia Düsseldorf in North Rhine-Westphalia. Currently in the NRW League.

Because of his success, he was inducted into the ITTF Hall of Fame in 2010 as the first German table tennis player . His fair behavior during the Paralympics 2012 was honored with the Fair Play Prize of German Sports and he was awarded the athlete with a heart at the German Sports Press Ball. In addition, Jochen Wollmert won the Disabled Sportsman of the Year 2012 award and repeated his award for Disabled Sportsman of the Year 2008 with the Felix Award 2012 . On September 18, 2013 Wollmert was awarded the Baron de Coubertin Award by the International Committee for Fair Play (CIFP) , the world's highest honor for fair behavior in sport. In 2014 Jochen Wollmert was awarded the Order of Merit of the State of Baden-Württemberg .

Personal

Jochen Wollmert only started playing table tennis at the age of 17. From birth he has a stiffness of the wrists and ankles ( arthrogryposis multiplex congenita ) (AMC). In disabled sports , he competes in the starting class M7. He works as a press spokesman for Barmer GEK and has three children.
