The Barmer Ersatzkasse (short name: Barmer ; original spelling : BARMER ) is a German health insurance company from the group of replacement funds . With around 9.1 million insured persons, it is one of the two largest health insurance companies in Germany. As part of the statutory health insurance , the Barmer Ersatzkasse is a corporation under public law with self-administration . She is a member of the Association of Substitute Funds (vdek).

The new Barmer Ersatzkasse was created on January 1, 2017 through the integration of the Deutsche BKK into the Barmer GEK . The Barmer GEK was created on January 1, 2010 from the merger of the Barmer Ersatzkasse (BEK) established on October 27, 1884 and the Gmünder Ersatzkasse (GEK) founded on May 4, 1878 .

The seat of the Barmer Ersatzkasse is Berlin . It has 390 branches that look after 9.1 million insured persons (as of June 2019). In 2019 the contribution rate is 15.7%.

history

In 1912, the commercial association for shop assistants in Barmen , which was founded in 1867, later became the health insurance company for commercial employees in Barmen e. H. (registered auxiliary fund; 1904) and the health insurance fund of the Association of Young Merchants in Görlitz (so-called mother fund , basis for anniversary dates), which was officially approved as a replacement fund in 1914, the original Barmer replacement fund. The name Barmer Ersatzkasse is derived from the Barmen district of Wuppertal , where the cash register was founded. At the time it was founded, Barmen was an independent city.

In 1932 the headquarters of the main administration was relocated to Lindenstrasse (today Axel-Springer-Strasse ) in Berlin . After the buildings had been badly damaged by the effects of the war, the Barmer headquarters initially settled in Nieheim and Bad Hermannsborn in East Westphalia , but returned to Wuppertal-Barmen in 1956. There was also a new building, which was attached to the now listed area. Both form the building complex Place of Remembrance . The 7.2 million Barmer policyholders at the time were looked after by around 19,500 employees in around one thousand branches and at the headquarters in Wuppertal. The Barmer was one of the largest health insurance companies in Germany and Europe .

On January 1, 2010, Barmer merged with the Gmünder Ersatzkasse (GEK) founded on May 4, 1878 to form Barmer GEK . The central administration of the two previous cash registers in Wuppertal (approx. 1700 employees) and Schwäbisch Gmünd (approx. 800 employees) remained the administrative headquarters even after the merger. In 2014 there were around 690 branches nationwide. In a press release dated February 24, 2014, the Barmer GEK announced that the number of branches will be reduced to around 400 by 2018 and that investments will be made in the development of telephone and online services at the same time. With a realignment of the organizational structure, the workforce is to be reduced by 3,500 positions in the medium term, so that around 11,500 full-time positions are to remain.

On March 2, 2016, Deutsche BKK and Barmer GEK announced that they had signed a merger agreement on January 1, 2017. On January 1, 2017, the two health insurances merged to form the new Barmer Ersatzkasse with the abbreviation Barmer .

Branches

The seat of the former head office in Berlin is today's (2018) headquarters of the Barmer. The two main administrations of Barmer are (2018) in Wuppertal-Barmen and Schwäbisch Gmünd. Barmer maintains 13 national agencies, each responsible for one or two countries. There are also several hundred (year 2018) branches.

Finances

The budget volume of the Barmer GEK budgeted for 2014 was 25.9 billion euros in health insurance ; Long-term care insurance accounted for a further 2.9 billion euros . The largest expenditure items were hospitals with EUR 8.6 billion, medical services with EUR 4.9 billion and the pharmaceutical sector with EUR 4.6 billion.

The Barmer board of directors consists of three members. The board of directors as a self-administration for the members consists of 30 member representatives.

Information technology

In order to further develop IT and to use synergy effects, in 2006 Barmer collaborated with AOK Berlin, AOK Brandenburg, AOK Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, AOK Rhineland / Hamburg, AOK Saxony-Anhalt, AOK Schleswig -Holstein and AOK Westfalen-Lippe have merged to form a working group in the legal form of a civil law company, the GKV Informatik (GKVI). Since October 2006, GKVI has been operating a joint data center in what is now Barmer's building in Wuppertal- Lichtscheid . Other IT areas such as application development, specification and testing have remained with the respective cash registers.

Reporting

With special reporting Barmer wants to make health care in Germany, with the practical orientation of the research activities are important concern. There are annual reports ( drugs , outpatient care, remedies and aids , hospital care , nursing care ) and scientific studies on the central German health issues.

Barmenia

In 1922, Barmenia Versicherungsbank für Mittelstand und Officials VaG zu Barmen was founded as a subsidiary of Barmer as a private health insurance company. The company merged with the Leipzig Commercial Health Insurance Fund in 1931 and soon began offering other insurance benefits. Today Barmenia operates as an independent company. By contrast, in the area of private supplementary health insurance , the HUK-Coburg exclusive partner.
