The Gmünder Ersatzkasse , GEK for short , was a replacement fund based in Schwäbisch Gmünd . On January 1, 2010, the GEK merged with the old Barmer Ersatzkasse (BEK) to form the Barmer GEK .

history

It was founded on May 4, 1878 as the National Sickness and Funeral Fund of the Trade Union of German Gold and Silver Workers and related professionals in Schwäbisch Gmünd . The Neptun-Ersatzkasse (N-EK) merged under the umbrella of the GEK on January 1, 1998 , the Brühler - Die Ersatzkasse and the Buchdrucker-Krankenkasse Hannover (BK) on January 1, 2004, and the HZK on July 1, 2008 on. On January 1, 2010, the GEK merged with the old BEK to form Barmer GEK.

In December 2009, the GEK looked after more than 1.7 million insured persons, including 1.2 million members, the remainder being family members who were also insured, making it the fifth largest replacement fund in Germany. The head office was located in the Schwäbisch Gmünder district of Unterbettringen .

The GEK was a member of the Association of Substitute Funds (vdek). Rolf-Ulrich Schlenker has been its chairman since January 1, 2008. Alexander Stütz was elected as a deputy on the board of directors.

The GEK recently employed around 2500 people, including 330 trainees, at more than 180 locations throughout Germany.
