history

Administration building in Wuppertal

Today's Barmenia health insurance a. G. was originally founded in 1904 as a commercial health insurance fund in Leipzig . The business area was initially limited to the Leipzig district headquarters . In 1905 the fund was renamed Friedrich August Bürgerliche Versicherungsbank a. G. to Leipzig . In 1909 the fund expanded its business area to the entire Kingdom of Saxony and called itself Friedrich August Sächsische Versicherungsbank a. G. to Leipzig . It was merged with the trade and craft health insurance fund for the Kingdom of Saxony - mutual insurance association (VaG) in Leipzig in 1923. From then on, the insurance association was called the Insurance Institution for Civil Servants and Independent Professions VaG . Finally, in 1930 the name was changed to the Leipzig Association for Health Insurance for Civil Servants and Independent Professions a. G. instead. Life insurance was given the name Leipzig Society for Mutual Life Insurance .

1922 emerged as a further branch of the largest German health insurance company based in Barmen (today in Wuppertal ) , the Barmer Ersatzkasse , the Barmenia insurance bank for medium-sized companies and civil servants VaG zu Barmen as later namesake. In 1926, Barmenia Lebensversicherung-AG zu Barmen was founded and in 1928 Leipziger Fürsorge Lebensversicherung a. G. In 1931 the two health and life insurance companies merged. The companies Leipziger Verein-Barmenia health insurance for civil servants, professions and medium-sized businesses a. G. and Leipziger Verein-Barmenia Lebensversicherung a. G. had their seat in Leipzig .

The business policy of the Leipziger Verein-Barmenia Krankenversicherung was marked by strong anti-Semitism . In 1931, for example, board member Max Teichmann described Jews as the “worst conceivable risk” because they allegedly deliberately exaggerated symptoms of the disease. From 1932 onwards, health insurance was one of the sponsors of the National Health Insurance Association , which mainly insured members of the Nazi movement . As of December 1933, the Hamburg District Office no longer employed any Jews and did not take out any new insurance policies with Jews. In the following years, Jewish insured persons were withheld from profit sharing and at the beginning of 1939 the Leipziger Verein-Barmenia Krankenversicherung , the largest private insurer in Germany with 800,000 insured persons, began to be excluded through refusal of benefits. The Reichsaufsichtsamt issued the relevant instruction in April 1940. The "National Socialist model company" received permits for the new Reichsgau Danzig-West Prussia , Luxembourg and Belgium and opened offices in Katowice and Prague .

The consequences of the Second World War were severe for both companies. Private insurance companies were banned and their assets were confiscated.

It was impossible for the companies to continue operating in the Soviet zone . In 1951, life insurance moved its headquarters to Hamburg and health insurance moved to Wuppertal. Barmenia Allgemeine Versicherungs-AG was founded in Wuppertal in 1958 . In 1966, Barmenia Krankenversicherung and Barmenia Allgemeine moved to their current location on Kronprinzenallee . In 1971 Barmenia Lebensversicherung a. G. their headquarters from Hamburg to Wuppertal. After reunification , Barmenia was able to return to its headquarters in Leipzig, where it opened a district headquarters in 1990. In 2010, the new head office building was opened at its traditional location in Kronprinzenallee in Wuppertal, which has been called Barmenia-Allee since May 2012 . Barmenia has been the main and jersey sponsor of Bundesliga soccer club Bayer 04 Leverkusen since 2016 .
