Thomas Schmidberger (born October 23, 1991 in Zwiesel ) is a German table tennis player in the Paralympic starting class TT 3 .

Career

Schmidberger has been paraplegic from an accident since he was five . As a disabled athlete , he played for TSV / RSG Plattling for some time . He is currently (Jan. 2020) playing for Borussia Düsseldorf .

In 2010 Schmidberger won silver at the world championships. In 2011 he took part in the European Championships and won bronze in the individual and gold in the team. In 2012 he won bronze in singles and silver with the team at the 2012 Paralympics in London . At the closing ceremony he was the German flag bearer.

In 2013 Schmidberger won gold at the European Championships both individually and with the team. In 2016 he won silver in singles and with the team at the 2016 Summer Paralympics in Rio de Janeiro, and in 2018 he again won silver in singles at the World Championships.

Schmidberger was voted Germany's disabled athlete of the year in 2013. For the Olympic medals he received the silver laurel leaf in 2012 and 2016 .

In 2019 Schmidberger became European champion in both individual and team. For this, the world association ITTF named him Para-Player of the Year .
