List of goal scorers of the German national soccer team

National player number goal scorers PNG

This list contains all goal scorers of the German men's national soccer team .

So far, 353 players have scored goals since the first game against Switzerland on April 5, 1908 . Adding 35 own goals by opposing players, the German national team has scored 2161 goals to date.

So far, with the exception of 1950, when there was only one game, and 2014, there was at least one new goal scorer in each game year (with no international matches played from 1915 to 1919 and from 1943 to 1949). Most often (22 ×) there were two new goal scorers. Most of the new goal scorers were in 2017 with ten players, which is primarily due to the fact that a large number of regular players were spared for the Confederations Cup 2017 and numerous players who were not previously considered were used. Before that, the record was eight new goalscorers, each in 1935, 1951 (including the later "Heroes of Bern" Max Morlock , Josef Posipal , Helmut Rahn and Ottmar Walter ), 1956 and 1962 (six of them after the 1962 World Cup, when Germany was eliminated in the quarter-finals for the first time).

So far, 353 players have met at least once for the German national team, around a third of them exactly once (as of November 19, 2019). Miroslav Klose scored the most goals  (71). The record scorer in front of Klose was Gerd Müller  (68), who was also the best World Cup scorer with 14 goals from 1974 to 2006 , before he was surpassed by the Brazilian Ronaldo with 15 goals in 2006 and also by Miroslav Klose with 16 goals in 2014. Besides Brazil, Germany is the only world champion nation whose record goalscorer has scored more than 70 international goals in his career. Several Asian and African national teams also have players with 70 or more international goals, although the significantly lower performance density of these continental associations and the, for this reason, much higher number of games against very weak and often only amateurs have to be taken into account. If you limit the comparison of the top scorers to European and South American teams for better comparability, only Cristiano Ronaldo (99 goals in 164 games), Ferenc Puskás (84 goals in 89 games), Pelé (77 goals in 92 games) and Sándor Kocsis ( 75 goals in 68 games) scored more goals in the national jersey.

Of the 59 German national players with at least 10 international goals to date, only five, namely the later national and world champion coach Helmut Schön , Otto Harder , Ernst Willimowski , Franz Binder and (so far) Serge Gnabry did not take part in any tournament for Germany as active players. Willimowski, however, played for the Polish national team at the 1938 World Cup in France . Of the 25 German national players to date with at least 20 international goals, with the exception of Richard Hofmann , who in 1933 - one year before the first German World Cup participation - was banned for one year for violating the amateur rules and then no longer played in the national team, everyone has participated in at least one soccer world championship. Apart from Ulf Kirsten, all of them achieved at least one place in the medal ranks. The ten most successful goal scorers of the German national team were each at least runner-up, with Lukas Podolski and Michael Ballack being the only ones who did not appear in any of the World Cup finals. Germany did not lose a single game in which record scorer Miroslav Klose was successful as a scorer; of the games in which his predecessor Gerd Müller met, only the game of the century against Italy.

Before Brazil (12 players) of all national teams, Germany has the most players who have scored at least 30 international goals (14) and most with at least 40 international goals (8 players). Ernst Lehner was the first German to score 30 goals; he scored his 30th goal on October 5, 1941 in the game against Sweden (final score 2: 4). As the last player for the time being, Mario Gómez reached the 30 mark on March 26, 2017 with a goal in the game against Azerbaijan (final score 4: 1) and Lukas Podolski with his goal on June 27, 2010 in the World Cup round of 16 against England (final score 4: 1) the 40s mark.

With ten goals from converted penalties, Michael Ballack is the record holder in this discipline. The second most penalty goals in the DFB jersey scored Lothar Matthäus , who scored eight times from the point. Gerd Müller , Mesut Özil and Bastian Schweinsteiger each scored five penalties for Germany. A special feature is that record goal scorer Miroslav Klose never scored a single penalty in his entire national team career.

In their first game in 1908, the German team fell behind after taking the lead and ultimately lost the game, as did the three subsequent games. The resulting negative goal difference she kept up to and including her 99th game in 1934. In the 100th game she managed to equalize this twice and then convert it into a positive goal difference. Since then, the positive goal difference has increased steadily. On June 29, 2017, a goal difference of +1000 was achieved for the first time with the interim 3-0 (final score: 4: 1) against Mexico in the semi-finals of the Confederation Cup ( current status, November 19, 2019: +1034).
