Franz Elbern (born November 1, 1910 in Liège , Belgium ; † February 23, 2002 in Küdinghoven , today Bonn-Beuel ) was a German soccer player for SV Beuel 06 , who was appointed to the senior national team eight times between 1935 and 1937 and scored two goals.

Career

Start at SV Beuel 06

In autumn 1918 mother Elbern came with her children Karl, Helene, Josef, Franz, Marcel and Hubert on a freight train from Liège to Beuel, where they found accommodation. Father Karl Elbern, who worked as an interpreter in the German civil administration in Liège, later followed his family. The boys all played in the youth teams of the Beuel 06 sports club , which was created on March 15, 1924 through the merger of the 06 football clubs and Alemannia 1919 . Even in the youth, success followed success. The "Elbern-Elf" made a name for itself. Franz, the third oldest brother, stood out for his speed and his wealth of tricks. The positive development continued among senior citizens. With the "Green-Whites", however, the promotion from the district class to the Gauliga Mittelrhein only succeeded in the 1936/37 season .

Three times in the previous rounds they just failed to gain promotion, twice as champions. The four Elbern brothers, Franz, Marcel, Hubert and Joe, were responsible for the goals in the attack. The class of Franz, Marcel and Joe Elbern also found their expression through their appointment to the Middle Rhine selection in the context of the Federal Cup competition 1934/35. Middle Rhine coach Sepp Herberger used the three brothers on January 6, 1935 in Cologne when they played against the Nordmark team . As the fourth SV Beuel 06 player, Herberger trusted Leo Klein in the runner row. In the 2: 3 defeat after extra time , Franz scored a goal as the right winger for the Mittelrhein national team . Before the Gauliga debut, the new stadium on Neustraße was played with a game against the German champions of 1935, FC Schalke 04 . The brothers Franz, Marcel, Hubert and Joe Elbern stormed for Beuel. "Jupp" Gauchel from TuS Neuendorf reinforced the attack of the promoted team in the 2-2 draw. In its debut year 1936/37, SV Beuel 06 finished fifth. The competitors were the Cologne clubs VfR 04, CfR, Sülz, SC 99, Würselen, Mülheim, TuS Neuendorf, Andernach and the Bonn clubs FV and TuRa.

Selection / national team

Franz Elbern, the sprinter on the right wing, was appointed to the Middle Rhine selection by trainer Sepp Herberger on June 24, 1934. The second game for the Kampfspiel-Pokal took place on July 8, 1934. The agile, technically outstanding winger scored one goal each. The third appearance of Franz Elbern followed on January 6, 1935 in the context of the Federal Cup competition 1934/35. In the game against Nordmark, the talent from Beuel stood out with a goal. Because of his performance in the club, his appearance in the Middle Rhine selection and the recommendation of trainer Herberger, Franz Elbern was invited by Reich trainer Otto Nerz in the first half of August 1935 to a two-week national team course in Duisburg-Wedau . Two international matches took place on August 18. In Munich the eleven of the established met under the direction of Otto Nerz on the national team of Finland . Germany won the game 6-0. Sepp Herberger looked after the "second squad" in Luxembourg with nine debutants, four of them - with Elbern, Gellesch, Fricke, Urban and Günther - as a complete storm; Veteran Willy Busch led the team as captain to.

In the spring of 1936, when he was promoted to the Gauliga, the winger from Beuel got a second chance in the national team. This also applied to the two Schalke players Gellesch and Urban . All three came on March 15, 1936 in Budapest in the 3-2 defeat against Hungary for their second international match. At the beginning of May the first course for the 1936 Olympics took place in Berlin . In the test match against FC Everton in Stuttgart on May 21, Franz Elbern stormed the right wing. In the 4-2 win, the dangerous German wingers Elbern and Seppel Fath each distinguished themselves as two-time goalscorers. After a three-week course in July, Franz Elbern was appointed to the 22 squad for the Olympics. Teammates, as well as competitors in the storm, were Lehner, Lenz, Hohmann, Gellesch, Gauchel, Urban, Siffling, Simetsreiter and Eckert. Germany played the first game in the Olympic tournament on August 4, 1936 in Berlin against Luxembourg . Elbern stormed on the right wing. The one-sided game was won by the team of coach Nerz with 9-0 goals. Elbern contributed a hit. Three days later, in the 2-0 defeat against the Norwegian national team , which meant the end, Franz Elbern paused. Ernst Lehner completed his 25th international match that day. When the national team first appeared after the 1936 Olympics, von Beuel was again on the right wing. On September 13, 1936, Germany drew 1-1 with the Polish national team in Warsaw . Another double game day was on the program on September 27th. The A-Elf, supervised by Otto Nerz, won 2-1 goals in Prague against the vice world champion from Czechoslovakia . Franz Elbern scored the 1-1 equalizer against one of the world's best goalkeepers, namely František Plánička , in the 59th minute . Elbern, Gellesch, August Lenz , Otto Siffling and Stanislaus Kobierski played in the storm for Germany . Sepp Herberger looked after the B team in Krefeld in the 7-2 win against the Luxembourg national team . Fourteen days later, on October 14, 1936, Elbern stormed back on the right wing in his sixth international match for Germany in Glasgow against the national team of Scotland . Ernst Lehner, Karl Hohmann and "Tau" Kobierski sat on the bench. Despite the 2-0 defeat, the German team was particularly impressive in terms of play. Four weeks later, on November 15th, the German team faced a major challenge in Berlin with the reigning world and Olympic champion from Italy . Even with this difficult task, Franz Elbern found the Reich trainer's trust. With the same eleven players as before in Glasgow, captain Fritz Szepan's team reached a 2-2 draw in front of 100,000 spectators.

In May 1937 a course for the national team took place. This included games against Manchester City . On May 6, Elbern played in Duisburg in a Germany selection on the right wing in a 0-0 win against the island's pros. On May 16, the memorable game against the national team of Denmark took place in Wroclaw . The 8-0 success established the birth of the Breslau-Elf . On this day Ernst Lehner stormed on the right wing , Elbern was a substitute player. Three days later, on May 19, Franz Elbern was again in a Germany selection in Berlin against Manchester City. On June 25, 1937, he completed his eighth international match against the national team of Latvia in Riga . In August of the same year he was again in a Germany selection. On September 5, 1937, a broken shin in the Gauligaspiel with Beuel at VfL Köln 1899 made any hopes of Franz Elbern's further international matches null and void. It was not until October 2, 1938 that he was able to play a points game again for SV Beuel 06 in the Gauliga. This blocked Franz Elbern's participation in the 1938 World Cup in France.

In the greatest triumph of his club SV Beuel 06, the Gauliga championship win in the Middle Rhine in the 1937/38 round, Franz Elbern was only actively involved in the first games of the autumn series due to the consequences of his broken tibia. The green-whites played in the Gauliga until the 1940/41 season. Franz Elbern did his military service in Pomerania. Therefore, he played in the 1940/41 season at SV Germania Stolp in the east section of the Gauliga Pomerania, which was divided into two sections . He was only able to support his home club as a holidaymaker. That wasn't enough; Beuel got down from the Gauliga Mittelrhein after five years. After the end of the Second World War , the ex-national player remained loyal to his club as an active player. It is true that the old international Christmas 1950 was said goodbye to the Beuel audience for the first time during a guest appearance by First Vienna FC . He actually played his last championship game for SV Beuel 06 at the age of 45 on April 3, 1955, in the association game against BW Godesberg.

On November 13, 1960 - twelve days after Franz Elbern's 50th birthday - a team from Beuel competed against a team of eleven players from the "Elbern family" in honor of the jubilee. Even the television WDR settled this sporty rarity not to be missed. The "Elberns" won with 4: 1 goals; Franz converted a penalty.

Honor

After the death of the 91-year-old Honorary President on February 23, 2002, a large mourners attended the funeral at the Küdinghovener Bergfriedhof. In his honor, the Beuel stadium was renamed "Franz-Elbern-Stadion".
