origin

Keppel grew up as the third of nine children in Halen near Cloppenburg , left elementary school after the sixth grade and was trained as an electric welder. After the failure of his first marriage at the age of 18, he married a second time in 1971 and moved to Rotenburg an der Fulda with his second wife . He began to write, couldn't find a publisher for his manuscripts, became unemployed and sought psychotherapeutic treatment.

The Lufthansa aircraft was hijacked on flight LH 850

On September 12, 1979, Keppel hijacked a Lufthansa airline on its flight from Frankfurt am Main to Cologne / Bonn. He threatened the crew with a toy gun , let the passengers disembark almost six hours after landing in Cologne / Bonn and kept the crew members under his control. Keppel asked for a personal interview with Chancellor Helmut Schmidt , conducted negotiations with State Minister Hans-Jürgen Wischnewski for several hours and then gave up.

Imprisonment, activity for the Greens in Hesse

In 1980 Keppel was sentenced to three and a half years in prison by the Düsseldorf Higher Regional Court; the judges recognized a reduced culpability . After his early release from prison, Keppel joined the Greens in Hesse. His nomination as a candidate of the Greens for the state elections in 1982 was rejected by the state election officer. Keppel became an assistant to the Green parliamentary group and was one of the so-called Fundis . He rejected the participation of the Greens in Hesse , wrote a "Manifesto of the Fundamentalists" together with the parliamentary group assistant Jan Kuhnert and resigned from the party in October 1985, but remained a member of the parliamentary group. When Keppel could not be found for a few days in February 1986, Kuhnert and others published an appeal entitled "We are looking for Raphael Keppel", and the Wiesbaden public prosecutor's office opened an investigation "on suspicion of kidnapping, extortionate kidnapping and hostage-taking". The suspicion should not be confirmed; Keppel finally reported by letter from Paraguay and returned to Germany on February 26, 1986. He allegedly had no memory of how he got to Paraguay.
