The river Lethe rises in the trough-shaped area of the Haler Heide (border in the north). The Soeste (border in the south) also rises in the Halen area, near Egterholz. history

The town of Halen is already noted in the land register (property rights register) of the Benedictine monastery Werden founded by Saint Liudger in 890 (see " Kloster Werden ") on the Ruhr . Halen identified itself as a heather village, but it also had wooded areas and the previously coveted green spaces on the Lethe .

One of the main attractions of this region is the “ primeval forest ” on the B 213 - an old oak-hornbeam forest in the “Staatsforst Baumweg”. The Lethetal, the Rüdersee, the Dianasee and the fish ponds are located in the north of Halen in the nature reserve “ Ahlhorn Fish Ponds ”, an impressive water landscape with more than 40 lakes and ponds. The north and east of the Lethe, however, belongs to the community of Großenkneten in the district of Oldenburg . An original chapel was probably built as early as 1426, a newly built chapel was consecrated in 1698 and the new Catholic church was built in 1965. The first school building was erected from 1826. Today there is a generously designed elementary school in Halen with an attached gymnastics hall.

Infrastructure

Another attraction in Halen is the Halen bathing lake , which has become a popular destination for those looking for relaxation and bathing enthusiasts thanks to the subsequent use of a former sand extraction point ("Baggersee") with its sandy beach and large lawns.

The motorway connections Oldenburg - Wilhelmshaven , Bremen - Hamburg and Osnabrück - Münster , but also the Osnabrück - Oldenburg railway line are “on the doorstep”. In order to take into account the increasing popularity of the easily accessible village, further building areas are being developed and provided by the municipality at reasonable prices. Thanks to flexible care times in the day-care center and kindergarten, as well as the high-performance elementary school, Halen is continuously working towards a good balance between family and work. All of this combined with a very lively club life is what makes Halen so interesting as a place to live for young families. Halen regularly takes part in the competition “Our village has a future” and in 2014 came fifth out of 52 participating villages. This meant that Halen qualified for the 2015 district decision and achieved one of the top places.
