Dieter Duhm (born September 19, 1942 in Berlin ) is a psychologist and book author . Duhm was best known as an organizer of community- like projects.

life and work

Dieter Duhm studied psychology at the University (WH) Mannheim when he was politicized by the Vietnam War and the shooting of the student Benno Ohnesorg at the demonstration on June 2, 1967 in West Berlin against the Shah . Duhm belongs to the so-called '68 generation , was temporarily close to the Marxist Socialist German Student Union (SDS) and published socially critical writings. His first major publication was in 1972 the book Fear in Capitalism , in which he broadened an approach to his diploma thesis from 1968. This was followed in 1973 by the structure of goods and the destruction of interpersonal relationships as, according to the subtitle, "the third attempt at the social justification of interpersonal fear in the capitalist commodity society."

As the book titles show, Duhm was always oriented towards individual, psychological problems in all of his theories on social issues. That is why he was very interested in the theories of the Marxist psychoanalyst Wilhelm Reich for a while . After dealing with and turning away from Reich, he dealt with traditional Asian theories and religious worldviews, which he wanted to use to change society. The result was initially another book: Man is different: Reflection on mocked but necessary content of a holistic theory of liberation. Critique of Marxism (1975).

Duhm's endeavors to move from theory to practice led him to several Buddhist , anthroposophical , therapeutic and other centers, including in Otto Muehl's “Action Analysis Organization” (AAO) . Finally, in 1979, he founded his own organization, the "Bauhütte": a social experiment with initially 5, soon around 50 participants, and a first community project to investigate how internal group conflicts in the areas of power, money, sexuality, Let love dissolve. According to Duhm's supporters, this project reveals basic structures for building sustainable human communities.

In 1991 Duhm was the spiritus rector of the Center for Experimental Society ( ZEGG ), which he initially helped to shape. Inspired by the self-portrayal method (action analysis) of the AAO, Duhm developed the forum in the Bauhütte , which is very similar to the psychodrama and serves to make conflicts of the individual within the group transparent and in this way to defuse them. The forum was and is being further developed in the Tamera and ZEGG projects .

Duhm lived in the meantime on Lanzarote and in Austria. In 1995, together with the theologian Sabine Lichtenfels , the physicist Rainer Ehrenpreis and others, he founded a community in Portugal called the “healing biotope” Tamera . In the following thirteen years the community grew to over 160 people. He initiated the “Peace School Mirja” and the “Political Ashram ” in Tamera as training locations for future “peace workers”.

Using terms that were popular at the time, such as holography , chaos research , systems theory and the controversial theory of morphic fields , Duhm founded a political “theory” that is supposed to lead to global peace: the so-called “plan of healing biotopes”, with which Duhm describes the destructive powers of the now wants to counteract capitalism under the buzzword globalization .

criticism

Duhm's attitude towards sexuality in his book Anxiety in Capitalism was heavily criticized, he was accused of playing down rape . He advocated the vulgar psychological approach that women harbored lifelong rape fantasies through the unconscious desire to be rape by their own father and sometimes experienced their first orgasm in the event of real rape . Women enjoyed violent instinctual gratification; those of them who campaigned against rape actually fought their own desire for masochistic gratification. In his remarks on rape, he referred to the remarks made by Freud's student Helene Deutsch on the phenomenon of female masochism.
