Jürgen Werner (born August 15, 1935 in Hamburg ; † May 28, 2002 there ) was a German football player .

Career

Werner started playing soccer in the youth department of Hamburger SV in 1946 and moved up to the first team in 1954 - together with Uwe Seeler , Klaus Stürmer , Gerhard Krug and Horst Schnoor - for which he played as an outside runner , later as a defender , until 1963. During his club membership he played 171 league games, in which he scored 14 goals, and seven games in the international club competition for the European Cup . With the Hamburger SV he eight times won the championship in the Oberliga Nord , four times the North German Cup, once the DFB Cup - to which he in his last competitive match on June 30, 1963 at 5: 2 victory in the second round when FC Bayern Hof contributed - and - the German championship on June 25, 1960 , after 1. On September 23, 1958, he played his only game for the U-23 national team in Kiel in a goalless draw against the national team of Denmark. Furthermore, between 1957 and 1960, he made five appearances in the selection team of the North German Football Association .

For the senior team he played four internationals, making his debut on March 26, 1961 in Santiago de Chile in the 1: 3 defeat against the host national team. His first of two goals he scored on December 23, 1962 in Karlsruhe in a 5-1 victory over the Swiss national team with the goal to 2-1 in the 36th minute. After studying Latin and sports, Werner switched to school service, where he was senior director of studies at the Oberalster grammar school and, most recently, did a traineeship in Hamburg. He remained a member of the HSV and in his final years held the position of deputy chairman of the supervisory board . At times he also coached SC Union from 1903 . For the DFB he was temporarily active as chairman of the game committee and appeared in public at the draws for the DFB Cup. He died of cancer at the age of 66. His final resting place is in the Ohlsdorf cemetery . After his death, the HSV's young talent center was given the name "Jürgen Werner School".
