Thomas Brdarić [ br̩daritɕ ] (born January 23, 1975 in Nürtingen ) is a former German football player and current coach of Croatian descent. Most recently he was the head coach of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt .

Player career

society

Brdarić started playing football at VfB Neuffen. He came to VfB Stuttgart in 1993 via FV Nürtingen , Stuttgarter Kickers and VfL Kirchheim / Teck . He played in the Bundesliga for VfB, Fortuna Düsseldorf , Bayer 04 Leverkusen , VfL Wolfsburg and Hannover 96 . Before his time in Leverkusen, Brdarić had played for the then second division club SC Fortuna Köln . He was twice runner-up in the Bundesliga with Bayer Leverkusen and reached the final of the Champions League in 2002 .

In the 2004/05 season Brdarić played for VfL Wolfsburg and moved back to Hannover 96 for 1.8 million euros at the end of the season . In the first year he was again a regular in the storm, but then he got problems with his knee and was only used eleven times the following year. Finally, he had to undergo several knee operations and so fell out completely in the 2007/08 season. In July 2008 he ended his career.

National team

In the national team , Brdarić made eight appearances and scored one goal. He played his first international game on March 27, 2002 in Rostock against the USA . He took part with the German national team at the 2004 European Championships in Portugal and the 2005 Confederations Cup in Germany.

Trainer and Sports Director

In March 2009, the Lower Rhine league club 1. FC Union Solingen Brdarić signed as sporting director. In May he took over the post of dismissed coach Frank Zilles until the end of the season. On August 17, 2009, Brdaric's contract in Solingen was terminated.

At the beginning of the 2010/2011 season he worked in the coaching staff of the U14 team at Bayer 04 Leverkusen , and in May 2011 he took over the A-youth team at KFC Uerdingen 05 .

In July 2011 Brdarić was hired by Dynamo Minsk as a sports director. In December 2011 he switched to the Uzbek champions Bunyodkor Tashkent as sports director .

In June 2013 Brdarić ended his engagement in Uzbekistan and signed a two-year contract as a coach with regional league team TSG Neustrelitz . With the team he became champions of the Regionalliga Nordost in the 2013/14 season and took part in the games for promotion to the 3rd division . The promotion to the third division was denied Neustrelitz after two defeats (0: 2 and 1: 3) against the second team of 1. FSV Mainz 05 .

At the beginning of the 2014/15 season, Brdarić became the coach of the second team at VfL Wolfsburg , which also took part in the promotion games as champions of the Regionalliga Nord , but failed in turn at SG Sonnenhof Großaspach . After only one season, Brdarić had to leave again. On May 27, 2015, just four days after the last match day, VfL Wolfsburg parted ways with him. His direct predecessor Valérien Ismaël also became his direct successor. In his only season with the second team of VfL Wolfsburg, the team reached second place in the Regionalliga Nord and thus stayed in the league. According to Klaus Allofs , Brdarić's dismissal had no sporting reasons, but was only due to the different ideas about the team's direction for the 2015/2016 season.

Between October 2015 and May 2016 Brdarić was the coach of the regional league team TSV Steinbach .

Brdarić took over the Macedonian first division and Europa League qualifiers KF Shkëndija for the second half of the 2016/17 season . Brdarić reached second place with the team this year behind the Macedonian record champions Vardar Skopje . In two semi-finals against arch rivals Vardar Skopje Brdarić reached the Macedonian Cup final against FK Pelister Bitola with his team . Due to the highly tense political situation in Macedonia, Brdarić left the country before the cup final against FK Pelister Bitola and thus dissolved the two-year contract with the Europa League qualifier.

On September 4, 2017, the top division tennis Borussia Berlin presented Brdarić as the new coach for the 2017/18 season. With the Berliners, the ex-national player just missed promotion to the regional league against Optik Rathenow. His involvement with TeBe ended at the end of the season.

At the beginning of the 2018/19 season , Brdarić became the coach of FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt . In fifth place, Erfurt missed the targeted promotion. After the 15th matchday of the following season Brdarić resigned after the team had been in the lower half of the table since the start of the season.

Others

Brdarić is married and has two children.

He owns a restaurant in Wesel - Bislich on the Lower Rhine.
