David Odonkor [ ˈdeːvɪt oˈdɔŋkoːɐ̯ ] (born February 21, 1984 in Bünde ) is a former German football player and coach . He is also known as a participant in numerous TV game shows .

Life

David Odonkor was born the son of a Ghanaian and a German in the East Westphalian Bünde, where he grew up and was active as a youth footballer. First he played for four years in the youth game community Holsen-Ahle and then moved to Bünder SV for three years . In 1998 he moved to the youth team of Borussia Dortmund and was initially used with the B-Juniors, later with the A-Juniors and the Dortmund amateur team. At Deutsche Post AG , Odonkor had started training as a postman at the same time , which he gave up in 2002 in favor of his career as a footballer.

Career

Career as a player

Borussia Dortmund

From 2002 he was part of the first team of Borussia Dortmund and was German champion in his first Bundesliga season 2001/02 . He was only substituted on twice, but caused a sensation with an assist and a penalty taken on him. On May 1, 2004 he scored his first Bundesliga goal on the 31st matchday of the 2003/04 season against Hansa Rostock with the goal to make it 4-1 for Dortmund. In the following period he developed into a regular player, where he stood out especially in the 2005/06 season . Because of his speed mostly used as a right winger , he hit 227 flanks for BVB; 21% of these led to great opportunities. Only Lincoln from FC Schalke 04 achieved a better value with 38%. The goal finish, however, was not one of Odonkor's strengths: Neither in Dortmund nor later in Seville did he score more than one goal per season.

Betis Seville

At the end of August 2006 he signed a five-year contract with the Spanish first division club Betis Sevilla . In November 2006 he underwent knee surgery. Odonkor made his comeback in the league on April 28, 2007 in the game against Atlético Madrid . He scored his first league goal for the Spaniards on matchday 35 of the 2007/08 season against UD Almería . In the 2008/09 season he rose from the Primera División after only a few appearances with Betis Sevilla. In the 2010/11 season Betis Sevilla succeeded in relegation from the Segunda División , Odonkor remained without use and left the club at the end of the season. He also parted ways with his advisor during this time.

Alemannia Aachen

After a lengthy rehabilitation, Odonkor was without a club at the beginning of the 2011/12 season and initially kept fit in the training of the fifth division TuS Dornberg , where he was to become a coach after his career. Between July 28 and August 5, 2011, he trained with the Glasgow Rangers , but withdrew from a commitment due to doubts about his fitness after a long injury break. In September 2011, the then second division team Alemannia Aachen hired him after a trial training until the end of the current season. In the goalless draw in the away game against SC Paderborn on September 9, 2011, Odonkor made his debut in the 2nd Bundesliga by substituting in the 69th minute for Marco Stiepermann . He scored his first goal for Alemannia on October 23, 2011 (12th matchday) in a 3-1 home win against FC Ingolstadt 04 with the final score in the 90th minute of the game. With the Alemannia he rose at the end of the 2011/12 season as the table penultimate from the second division.

FC Hoverla-Zakarpattya Uzhhorod

On July 12, 2012 Odonkor signed a one-year contract with the newly promoted to the Ukrainian Premjer-Liha FC Hoverla-Zakarpattya Uzhhorod . On the eighth game day he scored his first goal of the season in a 2-1 home win against Tawrija Simferopol in the 36th minute of the game. The club scored the first points of the season with this game and thus left the last place in the table. In January 2013 Odonkor expressed the wish to return to Germany because of the living conditions in Ukraine. In September 2013, he ended his active career due to persistent injury problems.

SV Wilhelmshaven

On October 28, 2019 it was announced that Odonkor will play for the district league club SV Wilhelmshaven on January 1, 2020 .

National team

Odonkor played for the German U-19 , U-20 and U-21 national teams .

In May 2006 he was appointed to the German squad for the 2006 World Cup and made his debut for the senior national team under Jürgen Klinsmann on May 30, 2006 when he was substituted on in the international test match against Japan . In the second round of the German team's match against Poland , he prepared after his substitution shortly before the end of the game with a cross from the right for the winning goal for Oliver Neuville's 1-0 . He was substituted on in the quarter-finals against Argentina. Following the 2006 World Cup, like the entire team, he received the Silver Laurel Leaf . He scored his first and only goal for the German national team on September 12, 2007 in a friendly against Romania at the Rheinenergiestadion in Cologne . In 2008, Odonkor was appointed to the squad for the 2008 European Championships by national coach Joachim Loew . There he completed his last international match on June 12, 2008, when he came on as a substitute during the preliminary round against Croatia at half time. At the end of the tournament there was the Vice European Championship. After the end of the European Championship finals in 2008, he was no longer nominated for the national team. In a total of twelve games he was on the field for the national team.

Coaching career

In September 2013 Odonkor started a trainer internship with Andreas Golombek at the regional league club SC Verl . The initial aim was to acquire the B-Trainer certificate. At the end of October 2013, Odonkor was assistant coach at SC Verl. As he intended to continue to work in the football business, he began in July 2014 with the Trainer A certificate. His time in Verl ended in summer 2014. At the beginning of August 2014, SC Herford hired him as an assistant coach; he held this position until February 5, 2015. The following day he took the position of coach at the Westphalia division TuS Dornberg . He resigned as a coach three months later.

In November 2015 Odonkor became the sporting director of Hammer SpVg in the Oberliga Westfalen . At the beginning of March 2017, he said he received the termination without notice after announcing that he would not extend his contract term beyond the end of the 2016/17 season. Since the 2017/18 season he has been coaching SpVgg Bad Pyrmont in the Hanover regional league .

Although he had extended his contract with SpVgg by two years in 2019, Odonkor terminated the contract and switched to the Turkish second division Eskişehirspor as assistant coach from Fuat Çapa for the 2019/20 season . There he also took over the position of sporting director. The engagement ended again in October 2019.
