Wilhelm Peter Hubert Fick , pseudonym Willy Fink (born February 7, 1893 in Cologne , † October 5, 1967 in Whitby , Canada ) was a German painter and graphic artist of Dadaism .

Life

Willy Fick was born as the son of the cabinet maker Richard AM Fick and his wife Anna Maria (née Kraft). He lived with his parents and siblings Maria, Richard and Angelika (later the painter Angelika Hoerle ) on Krefelder Wall in Cologne. He and his siblings took part in the family's regular chamber music evenings and discussion groups and thus came into contact with the cultural and art scene in their hometown at an early age.

In 1919 Hans Arp came to Cologne from Zurich, where he and Hugo Ball and Richard Huelsenbeck founded the Dadaist movement. Arp got in touch with Max Ernst and Johannes Theodor Baargeld and with them started the Cologne Dada group “Stupid”, which Willy Fick, his sister Angelika, her husband Heinrich Hoerle , Anton and Martha Räderscheidt and Franz Wilhelm Seiwert also joined . He and his friends viewed the Stupid group as a social revolutionary project.

From 1931 he painted magical-surreal scenes and called himself Willy Fink before he became a city official. During the time of National Socialism , Fick hid the numerically small work of 35 surviving works by his sister Angelika, which was only found in 1967 by the curator and great-niece of the artist Angie Littlefield in the Willy Ficks garden house in Cologne-Vogelsang .

Fick died in 1967 with relatives in Canada. Most of his work from the 1930s has only survived through photographs.
