Vogelsang is a district on the left bank of the Rhine in the west of Cologne .

location

The Vogelsang district borders Bickendorf in the east, Müngersdorf in the south, Müngersdorf in the west, Widdersdorf and Bocklemünd / Mengenich and Ossendorf in the north . The area consists of the 3 parts Alt-Vogelsang, Neu-Vogelsang, Vogelsang-Nord, which are separated from each other in their development by green spaces.

history

Planning and establishment

Due to the lack of housing as a result of increasing industrialization in the 1920s, the growing unemployment caused by the global economic crisis , and the resulting impoverishment of individual cities and districts, the then government of the German Empire under Heinrich Brüning decided to develop a new type of settlement in addition to the normal settlement to introduce. This was called the outskirts or jobless settlement . At the same time, jobs were set up and living space was created for the poor. When awarding the houses, long-term unemployed people and families with many children who, if possible, came from the country and were therefore used to rural work, should be given preference. The settlers should be able to support themselves by keeping small animals and growing vegetables. The government wanted to bring some of the industrial workers back into the agricultural production sector. The Vogelsang settlement founded in 1931 was also part of this measure.

time of the nationalsocialism

Contrary to the previous planning, which only provided for single-family houses, in the Third Reich , in 1936, apartment buildings were also built in Vogelsang, because the increasing workforce required additional living space. The built here dwelling type was Volkswohnung called. The Catholic parish church of St. Konrad was built in the settlement in 1936/37 according to plans by Hans Peter Fischer, which, together with the school and the inn, is still the center of the village today. During the Second World War , the outskirts of the district proved to be advantageous because it was spared from major destruction by bombs.

post war period

The residents were able to supply themselves with fruit and vegetables through their own small farm and additional meat rations were possible through keeping small animals. The citizens of the destroyed parts of the city envied the Vogelsanger, so that some resorted to self-help and obtained what they needed to live by night and fog - after all, the then Cardinal Joseph Frings had legitimized this type of mouth robbery in a sermon.

Time of the economic miracle

The Emmaus Church was built in 1955 for the Protestant parish that had recently become independent. Many single-family houses were built around the original settlement area in the 1960s. Due to the northern expansion of the district area, the second Catholic Church of St. Viktor was built in 1966/67 according to plans by Hans Schilling in the then modern architectural style. In the 1950s and 1960s, the settlement adapted in appearance to the other parts of the city and by the early 1970s it was no longer possible to determine that Vogelsang was once a poor settlement . This was mainly thanks to the thrifty and hardworking citizens, who gradually converted their simple settler houses into neat homes over the years.

present

Since 2000, the district has been growing with the expansion of Vogelsang-Nord with single-family houses and rental apartments. The development of Vogelsang from 1893 to 2010 has been shown since 2011 by the Cologne -based designer , architectural model maker and artist Bernd Grimm in seven bronze reliefs. In particular, it is about how the district has changed from arable land to the “Triotop” business park. The contractor for this work is Anton Bausinger (Friedrich Wassermann construction company). The bronze reliefs are each 1 × 1 meter and are set up on the Belvedere Bridge in Cologne. The spatial situations from the following years are shown in detail: 1893, 1926, 1934, 1975, 2000, 2010 and 2025. So far (2019) six of the bronze sculptures have been realized and can be viewed on site.
