The Chlodwig stele is in the field mark near Langendorf , a district of Zülpich , North Rhine-Westphalia . The stele is about 200 m behind the village in the direction of Wollersheim north of the federal highway 265 .

The stele stands at the point where the Battle of Zülpich between the Franks and Alemanni is said to have taken place in 496 . In this battle, Clovis , King of the Franks, is said to have made the vow to become a Christian in the event of a victory .

The stele was created in 1999 by the artist Ulrich Rückriem , who set up similar steles in Düren , the Rückriem steles . The work of art was given to the city of Zülpich by Henrik Hanstein from Haus Busch and Manfred Vetter from Langendorf Castle . In 2001 the stele was incorporated into the non-profit Manfred Vetter Foundation for Art and Culture .
