history

Whitby Township (today: The Town of Whitby) was named after the port town of Whitby in the English county of North Yorkshire . The first settlers officially settled in 1792. The settlers from the north of England named the cities east of Toronto after the northeastern cities in England such as B. York, Scarborough, Pickering, Whitby and Darlington. The name "Whitby" originally comes from Danish.

During World War II , Whitby was home to Camp X - a high security and espionage training facility set up by William Stephenson . However, the buildings have since been demolished. A memorial stone that Ontario's Lieutenant Governor John Black Aird had erected in 1984 commemorates the site .
