Protest the Hero ( English for "contradict the hero") is a Canadian progressive metal band from Whitby , Ontario . Until 2003 they played under the band name Happy Go Lucky .

Band history

In 1999 the then 14-year-old students Rody Walker, Tim Millar, Luke Hoskin, Moe Carlson and Arif Mirabdolbaghi founded the band under the name Happy Go Lucky . With the release of their first EP Search for the Truth in 2002, the band renamed themselves Protest the Hero . During the weekends and holidays, the five young people worked on more songs, played their first concerts and did a tour. In 2003 another EP was released with A Calculated Use of Sound .

After winning the Canadian Independent Music Award in the Favorite Metal Artist / Group category , the band released their debut album Kezia on August 30, 2005 , which was only released on March 4, 2006 in the USA under Vagrant Records . The lyrics, which were all written by bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi, were about Kezia, a woman who was executed by firing squad. It is noticeable that the texts were written from three perspectives: that of a priest, a prison guard and Kezia herself.

After the album was released, the band toured Canada and the United States with well-known bands such as As I Lay Dying , 3 Inches of Blood and Killswitch Engage . In September 2006, during a police check on guitarist Luke Hoskin, about 0.2 g of marijuana were found , which prevented him from continuing the tour with Trivium and The Sword . He was temporarily replaced by Marco Bressette until the end of November 2006.

In January 2008, the band's second album was released under the name Fortress with which they reached first place in the Canadian charts and made it to # 95 on the Billboard 200 for a week . Like its predecessor, the album was released via Vagrant Records. The lyrics were also by bassist Arif Mirabdolbaghi. On September 29, 2009, the band released their first live DVD Gallop Meets the Earth , which included concert recordings of a performance in Toronto .

On March 22, 2011, the third studio album Scurrilous was released via Vagrant Records.

On their album Volition , released on November 2, 2013, Chris Adler from Lamb of God played the drums, as Moe Carlson had previously left the band. Voilition won the Juno Award in the Metal / Hard Music Album of the Year category.
