General Motors of Canada is a subsidiary of the General Motors Company in Detroit ( USA ). The company's headquarters are in Oshawa on Lake Ontario . The company employs over 23,000 people at multiple production sites in Canada. The vehicles are produced for the North American market and some for export to other countries.
history
GM of Canada was founded in 1918 by taking over the Canadian automobile manufacturer, McLaughlin Motor Car Co. , which has produced vehicles in Canada since 1907. The vehicles were based on the Buick F model , which differed slightly from the US version. General Motors of Canada was founded after the complete takeover of McLaughlin Motor Car by General Motors. The company operates as a wholly-owned subsidiary of General Motors Company. In 1989 the new headquarters of General Motors of Canada was opened on Lake Ontario. This is located on Ontario Highway 401 and has an atrium with large displays showing the current vehicle models. In 2001 the GMC Canadian Regional Engineering Center was opened. It is primarily responsible for the development of the vehicles that are produced in Canada. In 2009, the Oshawa, Ontario manufacturing facilities were recognized by JD Power and Associates with the Silver Plant Quality Award .
