Toyota Motor Manufacturing Canada is a subsidiary of the Japanese automaker Toyota Motor Corporation . The company is based in Toronto . The company has two production plants for different types of vehicles. One plant is in Cambridge and another in Woodstock . The company markets the vehicles in Canada, the United States and, in some cases, other countries. A total of 8,000 people are employed in Woodstock and Cambridge.
history
On December 12, 1985, the company announced plans to build a plant in Canada. Construction work on the new plant began on May 6, 1986. The first vehicle rolled off the production line on November 30, 1988. A blue four-door Mica Corolla Sedan . The completion of the entire plant was celebrated from May 26th to 29th, 1989. An engine production line was added on November 30, 1993. In 1994 the production capacity of the plant was doubled. In 1995 engine production began in Canada. In 1997 the location was expanded further. Preparations for the production of the Toyota Camry Solara also began . On January 13, 1998, the Toyota Visitor Center opened. On June 29, 1998, the first Toyota Camry Solara rolled off the assembly line . The one millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line on September 22, 1999. The first Camry Solara convertible vehicle rolled off the assembly line on February 21, 2000 . On April 5, 2000 it was announced that the new Lexus RX 330 vehicles would be produced in Canada. The first deliveries are planned for 2003. January 3, 2002 the first Matrix CUV rolls off the assembly line . In December 2002 production of the Toyota Camry Solara ends . At the same time, preparations are being made for the production of the new Lexus RX 330 . September 26, 2003 the first Lexus RX 330 luxury sport rolls off the assembly line. The two millionth vehicle was delivered on June 28, 2004. On June 30, 2005, Toyota announced the construction of a new plant in Woodstock, Ontario. On September 20, 2006, construction began on the new plant. The three millionth vehicle was completed on September 26, 2007. The first Toyota Rav 4 rolls off the assembly line on November 4, 2008 . On December 4th, 2008 the new plant in Woodstock was officially opened. The fifth millionth vehicle rolled off the assembly line on November 5, 2012. In June 2012, Toyota announced it had invested $ 100 million in the plant. Furthermore, 400 additional employees are to be hired. This means that from 2014, 104,000 Lexus RX instead of 30,000 will roll off the assembly line. The production capacity of the plants is to be increased to 500,000 units.
