The One Shell Square is a skyscraper in New Orleans in the US state of Louisiana . It has 51 stories and measures 212.45 meters (687 ft ) to its highest point , making it the tallest building in the city and state.
architecture
The building was designed by Skidmore, Owings & Merrill. In terms of construction, it has strong similarities to One Shell Plaza in Houston and Republic Plaza in Denver, which were also designed by SOM. The client was Hines Interest. The main tenant is the Shell Oil Company, a US subsidiary of Royal Dutch Shell . Other tenants are Ernst & Young , Deloitte and other regional companies. The building is rented up to approx. 90%.
A double pipe system consisting of a steel core and a concrete casing was used to construct the building. Travertine , an Italian limestone, and bronze glass were used as the material for the facade . There is also a helipad on the roof. It is mainly used as an office building, the ground floor has space for retail.
At the time of completion in 1972 it was the tallest building in the southeast and the first to exceed the "magical height" of 200 meters. It wasn't until 1976 that it had to cede this title to the Westin Peachtree Plaza Hotel in Atlanta .
Hurricane Katrina
After the completion of the building, the stability due to the use of limestone as a facade material in the difficult weather conditions in the south-east of the USA was questioned. After Hurricane Katrina , One Shell Square, like many other buildings of this height, remained almost intact. The damage remained in the smaller area, like broken windows. After restoration, it was reopened to tenants in December 2005.
Film set
The building plays a central role in the film Parallels - Journey into New Worlds .
