Travel to new worlds - Parallels : (AKA Parallels is a) American science fiction - adventure film from the year 2015. He was originally a pilot designed for a television series and is based on a story by Christopher Leone and Laura Harkcom. It is about three young adults who are forced to visit a new parallel world every 36 hours .

action

The siblings Ronan and Beatrix receive a message from their father Alex that they should visit him at a certain address. When the two of them arrive there with Harry, Beatrix's friend, they find an abandoned skyscraper. The three enter the house.

Inside you will find various graffiti, and there are objects lying around that cannot be from this universe (e.g. a dragon burger). Suddenly the doors lock and an alarm sounds and the house “jumps”. In the course of the plot, they find out that the house changes to a parallel world exactly every 36 hours. In the house they also meet Polly, a traveler between worlds.

The first jump takes you to a dystopian , post-apocalyptic earth that has been through the nuclear holocaust . There they meet Tinker, a mercenary. He blames the house for the downfall of his world and wants to blow it up with a suitcase atom bomb . The change through the dimensions, however, saves the travelers from destruction. Tinker travels with you unnoticed.

The next world is technologically advanced and now seems utopian . On her, Harry is a corrupt lawyer and Beatrix is his wife. Ronan, on the other hand, never existed. His father Alex was involved in a fatal car accident three months earlier. Harry arranges for his other self to be arrested while Tinker finds his own way in this world.

When they return to the house, they meet Tinker, who uses electronic parts from the utopian world to build a machine that wants to influence the house's technology. When he activated the actually broken elevator, Alex appears and instructs his children to find the central "core world".

The film ends after the third jump without showing the earth on which the house is now.

Open questions

Further threads of action are woven into the plot, which are started but not dissolved. Since the television series was never shot, many questions remain unanswered. In the end, you see that there is not just one Polly, but at least three, you learn that the answers to many questions could be found on the upper floors of the high-rise and that there has to be a central “core world” somewhere, a sort of Earth-1 that the skyscraper could have built.

Comparison with other television series

The basic idea is similar to the TV series Sliders - The Gate into a Foreign Dimension . In both cases, the first journey led to a dystopian earth, but later to an (apparently) utopian one , in both cases the main characters are confronted with their alternative selves from the parallel worlds. While the first season of Sliders is still trying to address scientific topics, Parallels has refrained from providing a scientific explanation from the start.

production

Parallels - Journey to New Worlds was produced by Fox Digital Studios for the streaming provider Netflix . The originally planned series, which would follow the plot of the film, was never realized. The shooting took place in the US state of Louisiana , including in Terrytown . The skyscraper with which the protagonists travel through time is One Shell Square in New Orleans .

reception

Parallels - Journey to New Worlds received varying ratings from the critics. On the Rotten Tomatoes website , the film achieved an audience rating of 42% based on 438 votes. The editorial staff of Filmdienst magazine described the plot as "helpless" and described the film as a "visually modest science fiction adventure". Cinema judges the beginning of the film as “a bit wooden”, but afterwards it certified an increasing tension. For the film site Komm & Sieh, Parallels is an “excellent, fantasy-stimulating science fiction mystery” as well as “aloof and appropriately dark”; the planned series has been called "one of the most interesting SciFi series that will never exist".
