career

Club level

1935-1953

Kreß began his career at the traditional Fulda club FV 1910 Horas , a neighboring town of his native Niesig, which had 160 inhabitants at the time. In Horas he played from 1935 to 1953 as a winger and was known there under the nickname "Blitz von Horas". The locksmith's son remained connected to his homeland association throughout his life.

1953-1960

In the 1953/54 season, Kreß moved to Eintracht Frankfurt . At the time, the team played in the Oberliga Süd , which until the 1962/63 season was part of the top German division in the DFB area. At Eintracht, Kreß was used as a typical “right wing”.

At the club level, Kreß was able to celebrate his greatest successes from the end of the 1950s. In 1959, at the age of 34, Kreß became German football champions . The final held in the Berlin Olympic Stadium was won by Eintracht in a derby against Offenbacher Kickers 5: 3 afterwards.

A year later, Kreß was in the memorable final of the European Cup , today's UEFA Champions League . The final played on May 18, 1960 went down in European football history due to the high number of goals and spectators. The final at Hampden Park in Glasgow saw 127,500 spectators. The opponent of Eintracht was Real Madrid , the world's best team at the time, which had won the trophy that had been played since 1955/56 four times in a row, making it the only title holder. Kreß scored the surprising 1-0 lead in the 18th minute. At halftime it was 3-1 for Real. In the end, Madrid clearly prevailed and won the most important club title in Europe 7-3 for the fifth time in a row. At Real, Ferenc Puskás met four times and Alfredo Di Stéfano three times. After the flight home, more than 60,000 people cheered Eintracht on their drive to the reception in Frankfurt's Römer .

1961-1964

Due to the twelve-year rating , the upper division Eintracht Frankfurt was able to qualify for the newly introduced football Bundesliga for the 1963/64 season. Kreß was one of the starting eleven in the first Bundesliga game of Eintracht, which ended 1: 1 against 1. FC Kaiserslautern in the Waldstadion on August 24, 1963 . At the same time, at 38, he was the oldest active player in the First League and is the earliest born player in the history of the Bundesliga , ahead of Max Morlock and Dragomir Ilic from Bremen , who were also born in 1925.

In 1964 Kreß ended his football career after a first division season that Frankfurt finished third. For Eintracht he completed 573 point games.

For Frankfurt Eintracht Kreß scored at least 99 competitive goals between 1953 and 1964, of which were accounted for
