career

The striker in the "Offensive System" at the time was a model maker by profession. He began his career at the Breslauer FV 06 and reached the finals with his club in the 1930/31 season in southeast Germany. There he took second place with the blue-whites after a playoff against local rivals Breslauer SC 1908 (6: 3). The 20-year-old attacker played his only international match against Norway on November 2, 1930 in Wroclaw . He came on in the 46th minute for the injured Karl Hohmann . In the 55th minute, he brought the German national team 1-0 lead. In the 1-1 draw, Hans Jakob , Erich Kauer and Josef Wendl also made their debut alongside captain Richard Hofmann .

On January 11, 1931, he represented the colors of the southeast at the side of Fritz Langner (VfB Breslau) in the competition of the Federal Cup against Central Germany.

In July 1931, Hanke moved to Vienna AC in Austria. From January 1932 to 1935 he played for DSV Saaz in Czechoslovakia and was briefly awarded to SK Prostějov in the 1934/35 season. He then moved to France, where from 1935 he was active for two seasons each at FC Metz and later at Stade Rennais . With the WAC, "the Breslauer" was in the final of the Mitropa Cup in November 1931 , with the DSV Saaz he was twice German-Bohemian champion, the CS Metz had succeeded in promotion to Division 1 in 1935 . With the new first division, Hanke finished 11th in 1935/36 and scored seven goals in 27 league games. At the side of the Austrian national player Matthias Kaburek , he finished seventh in 1936/37 with the club now run as FC Metz and repeated exactly the same figures from the previous year.

In 1939 his professional time in France was over, but contrary to what had been assumed for a long time, Hanke had not finally given up his shoes. According to the trade press, he was initially (again) with the NSTG Saaz, as his former club was now called. A little later he made his debut with three goals in a friendly game for Hamborn 07 .

Walter, Richard or Josef?

For an unknown reason, Hanke appeared in various sources at times with the first name Richard . Hanke himself signed “Walter Hanke” on the autograph card shown here (private property). He was only known by his first name "Walter" in his family and friends. He is occasionally confused with the Austrian soccer player Josef Hanke, formerly 1st Vienna FC , who also played in France in the 1930s. He returned to Vienna from Roubaix in 1938 .
