Frank Baumann (born October 29, 1975 in Würzburg ) is a former German soccer player and today's soccer official . He is currently the Managing Director of Sports at Werder Bremen .

Career as a player

Frank Baumann was originally a defender and later moved to defensive midfield.

society

Born in Würzburg, he began playing football when he was young at the local TSV Grombühl club . In 1991 he moved to the youth team of 1. FC Nürnberg, where he began his professional career. In 1999 he joined SV Werder Bremen, where he ended his active time in 2009, but continued to work for the club.

Nuremberg

Baumann began his professional career on October 3, 1994, the seventh game day of the second division season 1994/95 in the home game against SG Wattenscheid 09 in the starting line-up. During the current season he only made four more appearances, but at the beginning of the next season he developed into a regular player. He proved loyalty to the club when he accompanied the club to the regional league in 1996/97 . There he was immediately promoted again and a year later the march through to the Bundesliga. In the season finale 1998/99 he became a tragic figure. Before the last day of the match, 1. FC Nürnberg thought that relegation was already assured, but then relegated. This in turn meant that Baumann, who actually wanted to stay in Nuremberg, changed the club, as he was about to be called up to the national team. Baumann had missed a big chance in the 89th minute of the last game - one more goal would have been enough to keep the league.

Bremen

Frank Baumann 2007

Baumann moved to SV Werder Bremen. He was the first player to be signed by the new coach Thomas Schaaf . In 2000 Baumann became team captain, which he remained until the end of his career. Due to his calm demeanor and his clear style of play, he enjoyed a high reputation within the team. He was an important building block for the championship and the DFB Cup victory in 2004. In his last active years he was repeatedly thrown back by injuries, especially to the Achilles tendon . He was only able to play 19 and 17 games in the Bundesliga in the 2005/06 and 2006/07 seasons .

In the 2008/09 season Baumann was able to be deployed more frequently again. With a goal in the semi-finals, he led the team to the 2009 UEFA Cup final . There Bremen was defeated by Shakhtar Donetsk . At the end of the season he ended his active career; the last game of his career he played in the DFB Cup final on May 30, 2009 against Bayer 04 Leverkusen , which Werder won 1-0.

On December 16, 2009 Baumann was named the seventh honorary captain of SV Werder Bremen.

National team

Baumann made his debut for the German national team on November 14, 1999 in a 1-0 win against Norway in Oslo . He played his last game on March 26, 2005 against Slovenia . He scored his two goals both in 2001 friendlies against Slovakia and Hungary.

Baumann took part in the 2002 World Cup with the national team and was substituted on in the 60th minute of the round of 16 against Paraguay . At the 2004 European Championship in Portugal Baumann played in the first group game against the Netherlands and in the second group game against Latvia ; the team was eliminated after the group stage.

Career as a functionary

Following his career as a professional footballer, Baumann moved to Werder Bremen's management team at the beginning of 2010 after six months of “time off” as assistant to the then CEO Klaus Allofs . At the end of 2011 he also became head of the scouting department. In November 2012 he was promoted to director of professional football and scouting ; In this position, created especially for Baumann, he worked directly for the managing director of professional football Thomas Eichin . After the 2014/15 season he gave up his job.

On May 19, 2016, Werder Bremen announced just one year later that Frank Baumann would replace the previous sports director Thomas Eichin, from whom the club had separated immediately before due to different views on future sporting development. On May 27, 2016, Baumann was presented by the club in his new role as Managing Director Sport at a press conference. The contract ran until June 30, 2019. In September 2018, his contract was extended by three years to June 30, 2021.
