Armida

Armida is an operatic subject that was particularly popular in the 18th and early 19th centuries.

The story of the sorceress Armida, based on the 1575 epic La Gerusalemme liberata (Eng: The Liberated Jerusalem ) by Torquato Tasso, who uses her magical powers to hold the crusader Rinaldo imprisoned on her island, stimulated the imagination of composers in numerous versions, including :

Opera as namesake

An asteroid discovered on August 24, 1903, (514) Armida , was named after the title character of Gluck's opera.

The Armida Quartet , founded in 2006 , is named after Haydn's opera.
