Nikolaos "Nikos" Nioplias ( Greek Νικόλαος Νιόπλιας , born January 17, 1965 in Galatini , Greece ) is a Greek football coach and former player.
Player career
Nioplias started his professional career in 1982 at OFI Crete . The midfielder won the Greek Cup with OFI in 1987 before moving to Panathinaikos Athens in 1993 . At Panathinaikos Nioplias experienced his most successful sport phase. In addition to two Greek championships (1995, 1996) and three cup wins (1993, 1994, 1995), he and his team caused a sensation in the 1995/1996 season when Panathinaikos made it to the semi-finals of the UEFA Champions League . In 1996 he returned to OFI and stayed there until the 2001/2002 season when he moved to Atromitos Athens . In the summer of 2004 Nioplias ended his active career as a player after 509 first division appearances, which means after Dimitrios Domazos second place in the Greek best list.
Nikolaos Nioplias played a total of 44 times for the Greek national soccer team and took part in the 1994 soccer World Cup in the United States .
Coaching career
After his active career, Nioplias completed a coaching course in the Netherlands in 2005 and then took over the U19 selection for Greece. On December 8, 2009 he became the new head coach at Panathinaikos Athens and was able to win the championship in his first year. His work as national coach for Cyprus ended after the disappointing performance in qualifying for the 2014 World Cup in September 2013.
