The Dronning Louises Bane ( German  Queen Louise Railway ) between Nyborg and Middelfart via Odense was the first railway on the Danish island of Funen . Today it is part of the København – Fredericia railway line .

history

The first serious plans to cross the island of Funen with a railway line emerged in 1844. The plans included a line from Copenhagen via Korsør , Nyborg and Odense to Assens , which was followed by a railway ferry to Schleswig .

On June 8, 1844, an application was submitted to the king for a concession for this route. This forwarded the plans to the Royal Railway Commission. On July 2, 1844, the Railway Commission asked for more information as well as a detailed design plan and a financial plan. When the war broke out in 1844, the railway project was postponed.

With the Railway Act of February 15, 1857 , the construction of a railway line from Nyborg via Odense to Lillebælt ( German  Little Belt ) was approved. However, there was no one who wanted to use the concession to operate a railway,

The Railway Act of March 10, 1861 again included a route from Nyborg via Odense to Middelfart. A train ferry was supposed to run from Middelfart to Snoghøj on the Jutland coast of the Belt. In 1863 this route was changed and instead a train ferry was planned between Fredericia and Strib . The German-Danish War from February to October 1864 delayed the construction of the line, which was completed in 1865 by the English consortium Peto, Brassey and Betts .

King Christian IX, who was interested in the railways . had already determined in advance that the railway should be handed over to its destination in honor of Queen Louise on her birthday on September 7, 1865. The route was therefore named Dronning Louises bane .

On March 19, 1872, Denmark's first railway ferry line was opened with the Lillebelt railway ferry between Fredericia and Strib.
