The Tønder – Tinglev railway was part of the South Jutian Cross Railway , which ran from Sønderborg to Højer .

history

The section from Tondern ( Danish Tønder ) to Tingleff ( Danish Tinglev ) was built by the Prussian State Railways while Northern Schleswig was part of the German Empire and went into operation on June 26, 1867. Tønder received its first rail connection in 1867 with the opening of the line, which ended at what was later to be Tønder Ostbahnhof. In 1888 the extension from Tondern Ost to the marching station Tondern took place .

Takeover by the Danish State Railways

The single-track railway line was taken over by DSB in 1920 .

End of track in Tønder Øst

Passenger traffic was operated until 1971, it was mostly only of local importance. Between 1948 and 1966 there was a direct railcar connection between Sønderborg and Tønder. Freight traffic took place until 2001. In theory, the section from Tønder to Tønder Øst was still navigable until 2011. The route to the east of the station building in Tønder Øst was closed. With the completion of the track renewal at Tønder station and the line towards Bramming / Esbjerg , the switch towards Tinglev was expanded at the end of 2011.

Several attempts to revive the railway, be it in museum operation by the Tinglev – Tønder veteran Jernbane or, as politically requested, as a ring railway operation on the Tønder – Tinglev – Padborg – Flensburg – Niebüll – Tønder lines, have so far failed. The cost of a total renovation in order to be able to drive the line with diesel locomotives of the ME series and speeds of 120 to 140 km / h are estimated at 70 million crowns .

A hearing started on March 31, 2017 and was commissioned by the Danish Ministry of Transport to Banedanmark. This hearing will initially last until April 27, 2017. Since the route has not been maintained since 2002, its condition is very poor. It no longer has any connection to the rest of the Danish rail network at either terminus. Part of the track is over 100 years old. During various construction measures, especially at level crossings, the rails have already been removed to enable a continuous road surface.

The aim of the hearing is to take a decision on the final shutdown.
