The Tondern march station was opened by the Glückstadt-Elmshorner Eisenbahn-Gesellschaft (Jernbanegade 8) on November 15, 1887 as part of the extension of the march line from Niebüll to the then state border near Hvidding ( Hviding in Danish ). The Tondern – Tingleff railway from Tingleff was introduced into the new station, which was located just north of what is now Tønder station. The house was in operation as a station building from 1887 to 1890.

history

With the nationalization of the private railway company, renamed Schleswig-Holsteinische Marschbahn-Gesellschaft in 1888, on July 1, 1890, the Prussian State Railways took over the operation. In the following years they made extensive extensions to the railway facilities. A station building , the depot and the goods handling area were newly built. The access to the platforms was equipped with an overpass. The new station is sometimes also called Marschbahnhof Tondern ( Danish Tønder Marskbanegården ).

On June 15, 1892, the connection to the Hoyerschleuse ( Danish Højer Sluse ) with a ferry connection to the island of Sylt was put into operation.

The old station building of the Marschbahn was rebuilt and continued to operate as Eichlers Hotel . In 1897 the hotel was leased to the horse dealer Ludolph Outzen, who changed the name to Marschbahnhof Hotel . In 1902 he also took over the “Hotel Stadt Hamburg” in Vestergade.

It was closed in 1935 due to stiff competition from the other hotels in the city. In 1942 the hotel was hit by bombs from British fighter planes destined for the railway facilities. The buildings were never completely rebuilt. In 1945 the rest of the buildings were taken over by the Laursens Borgtrykkeri printing company , which used them until 1962. A restaurant that was later located there was closed in 1996.
