Odense – Svendborg railway line
The Odense – Svendborg railway is a railway line on the Danish island of Funen . It leads from Odense to Svendborg and was built by the private Svendborgbanen .
Svendborgbanen
The Odense – Svendborg line of the private Svendborg Railway was opened on July 12, 1876 as the first private railway on the island of Funen and as the first branch off the state railway Nyborg – Strib . The legal basis for the construction was created with a law on May 23, 1873 and the concession was granted on May 20, 1874. This concession was transferred to Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab (SFJ), which was founded on May 28, 1874 in rings .
The reason this line was privately built was because the government at the time believed that the state should only build the main lines in the country. The branch lines were to be built by interested private parties with government support.
The SFJ was given the job of building the line, which took over operations until April 1, 1949. Since then, the line has been operated by Danske Statsbaner (DSB).
Important train stations
The following important train stations are or were on the route:
- Odense, starting point of the railway from 1954 and connection to the Nyborg – Fredericia railway line ( den fynske hovedbane )
- Odense Syd, starting point of the railway until 1954.
- Fruens Bøge, starting point of the Odense – Nørre Broby – Faaborg Jernbane to Faaborg
- Rings, connection to Nyborg –ringen – Faaborg Banen to Nyborg and Faaborg
- Svendborg, connection to the railway line Svendborg – Faaborg and railway line Svendborg – Nyborg
Technical improvements
Numerous technical improvements have been made to the route since 2003:
- From May 12 to June 9, 2003, the technical systems were expanded, tracks and sleepers were replaced and individual level crossings were closed. At some stations the platforms have been lengthened or changed. In Odense, a track between the bus station and the existing platform became track 7. During this time, the trains were replaced by a rail replacement service .
- Between August 11 and September 7, 2003, 25 km of rails and 20,000 sleepers were laid between Stenstrup and Årslev. 15,000 m³ of ballast were cleaned. During this time the trains were replaced by buses. As part of these measures, the station buildings in Hjallese, Højby, Pederstrup, Rudme and Stenstrup were demolished and the platform areas were modernized.
- In January 2004 the trains could be used free of charge on the route between Odense and Svendborg to compensate for the many cancellations and delays of the previous year. DSB had rented twelve Siemens Desiro units in advance to replace the MR-MRD trains that had been on the route since 1980 . With these MQ trains, the speed on the route could be increased from 100 to 120 km / h. In addition, a half-hourly service in both directions between Odense and Svendborg and an hourly service in both directions between Odense andringen could be introduced.
- In 2005 the signal systems along the route were overhauled or renewed and the rails sanded.
- During the preparations for the renovation of the line and reconstruction work at Svendborg station, further remains of an already well-known medieval Catholic monastery were uncovered in the track area in May 2007, so that a month's rail replacement service was carried out between Svendborg and Svendborg Vest. After that, the trains left a makeshift platform in Svendborg. The archaeological investigations lasted until January 28, 2008.
- From May 30 to August 9, 2009, the two remaining sections of the route Svendborg – Stenstrup and Årslev – Odense, a total of 27 km, were renewed. The sleepers and rails have been replaced. In addition, thirteen bridges along the entire route were overhauled, nine level crossings were modernized and two points were replaced. During the construction work, the route between Svendborg andringen was closed until the summer school holidays and the entire route was closed during the school holidays. The passengers were transported in the rail replacement service.
Disused stations
Odense Syd (1876-1954)
Odense Syd (also Odense Sydbanegård , Odense S. Odense SFJ ) at Vestre Stationsvej 5 was the station on Svendborgbane from the opening until May 22, 1954. From this point on, the line leads to Odense hovedbanegård ( German Odense Central Station ) at Østre Stationsvej . The old station building was opened on December 8, 1954 as a bus station, the access to which was relocated on May 28, 1978 to the other side of the railway line in Dannebrogsgade. The building is now used by the administration of Fyns Almennyttige Boligselskab ( German Fünens non-profit housing association ). The two-story building was built by HAW Haugsted in the Renaissance style in 1876 for the opening of the railway line. In 1911 the side wings designed by J. Vilhelm Petersen were added.
Lindved (1934–1955)
The Lindved stop was in the village of Lindved between Hjallese and Hoejby. The station existed from May 15, 1934 to May 21, 1955 and was set up at the request of the residents.
Kirkeby (1881-1969)
The costs for the construction of the Kirkeby station near Kirkeby Hede (now Kirkebyskoven), which was about 1.5 km from the town of Kirkeby , were organized by Chamberlain Otto Ditlev Baron Rosenørn-Lehn , Foreign Minister in the Estrup government , as the Hvidkilde estate wanted a loading bay for wood products. The station opened on August 24, 1881. In 1907 the station building was torn down and replaced by a new building. On June 29, 1965, the building of this station was closed and from June 1, 1969, no more trains stopped at this station.
Sørup (1876–1965)
Sørup Billetsalgsted ( German Sørup ticket sales point ) was between Kirkeby and Svendborg and was put into operation with the opening of the route. The last train stopped at this station on May 29, 1965.
Current traffic
During the day there are two trains per hour on the route between Odense and Svendborg (only one in the evening) in each direction, which do not stop at all stations. There is one train per hour in each direction between Odense andringen both during the day and in the evening, which stops at all stations.
According to a tender by Transport-, Bygnings- og Boligministeriet ( German Ministry of Transport, Building and Housing ) for the implementation of regional transport in Denmark by private providers, the award of the train services between Odense and Svendborg is to be stipulated by contract for eight years from December 2020 .
future
From 2020, Arriva Danmark , a subsidiary of Deutsche Bahn AG, is to take over regional traffic on the route.
