Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab , short form Sydfyenske Jernbaner (SFJ) was a Danish railway company that built and operated a number of railway lines in South Funen . On April 1, 1949, the entire standard gauge (1,435 mm) network of the SFJ was transferred to the Danske Statsbaner (DSB). Nevertheless, the SFB, ONFJ and SNB remained private railway companies until they ceased operations.

history

As the first private railway on the island of Funen and the first branch of the state railway Nyborg Strib was Svendborgbanen private Svendborgbanen opened on July 12, 1876th The legal basis for the construction was created with a law on May 23, 1873 and the concession was granted on May 20, 1874. This concession was transferred to Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab (SFJ), which was founded on May 28, 1874 in rings . She was given the job of building the line.

The reason this line was privately built was that the government at the time believed that the state should only build the main lines in the country, while the secondary lines should be built by private interests with state help.

The situation developed to the extent that Det Sydfyenske Jernbaneselskab not only ran the traffic on the main Odense – Svendborg route, but also the other routes in the south and east of Funen.

On April 1, 1882, Danske Statsbaner (DSB) opened the rings – Faaborg railway line, but from the start rented it to SFJ, which carried out the operation. From September 1, 1897, SFJ took over the management of the rings – Nyborg of the rings – Nyborg Banen (RNB), from August 1, 1902 that of the Svendborg N – Nyborg H of the Svendborg – Nyborg Banen (SNB) from August 3 October 1906 that of the Odense – Faaborg private railway line of Odense – Nørre Broby – Faaborg Jernbane (ONFJ) and finally from November 25, 1916 that of the Svendborg – Faaborg private railway line of Svendborg – Faaborg Banen (SFB).

All routes were operated by SFJ with shared vehicle use and shared staff. This made the SFJ one of the largest private railway administrations in Denmark. Through further close cooperation with Odense – Kerteminde – Martofte Jernbane (OKMJ) and Nordvestfyenske Jernbane (OMB), the company was able to achieve advantages in various areas, such as in the mechanical engineering area. SFJ built its own steam locomotives based on their own and other people's drawings.

Due to the high cost pressure in the 1930s, the Minister for Public Works set up a committee which, on December 1, 1939, prepared a draft to redefine the business relationship with the SFJ. On March 10, 1942, the report of this committee was presented. In it it was suggested that the state should take over the Svendborgbanen and take over the management of the Nyborg –ringen – Faaborg Banen . As before, the remaining private railways were to be managed by SFJ by lease.

The SFJ should earn as much as possible with them in order to secure the pension obligations of the employees. During the economic boom of the railway lines during the Second World War, it was decided to nationalize all SFJ railways on April 1, 1949. This brought no significant improvement over the years, so that all other routes except for Svendborgbanen were gradually discontinued.
